Description: First edition hardback - volume two only of a two volume set, 1950, with no jacket as issued. In overall good used condition with only minor signs of age, handling and storage - boards slightly rubbed with chips to cloth at spine head and tail, and slight crack to lower front spine fold. Binding tight and appears little read - hinges sound. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions; toning to page-ends but text and illustrations (with tissue-paper guards) bright and clear throughout. Photographs available. Professionally rebacked. Brown cloth binding with gilt illustration on the cover and gilt title on the spine. Minor wear to cover such as bumping on the corners and faint scuffs and marks; spines are torn in places particularly at top and bottom. Vol 2. has a black ink smudge on the cover and both volumes have faded patches on the back boards. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked with light foxing and faint watermarks. Very few pencil annotations. These copies previously belonged to Edmund Loder, an English aristocrat, landowner and plantsman. His book-plates appear on the front end-papers. Protective tissue over frontispiece in Vol 2. Complete with all plates including the map at the end of Vol 1. Roualeyn Gordon Cumming was a Scottish traveler and sportsman, known as the "lion hunter". The story of his exploits are vividly told in this book. David Livingstone, who furnished Gordon-Cumming with most of his native guides, wrote: 'I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Cumming's book conveys a truthful idea of South African hunting' (Missionary Travels, chap. vii.).

With a frontispiece and vignette title page in each volume, and 13 additional plates including a map, a total of 17 illustrations as called for. 8vo, bound in contemporary three quarter dark-rose calf over marbled boards by Bosworth and Harrison. The spines with gilt stippled and ruled raised bands between gilt framed compartments with elegant corner-pieces, additional gilt ruling at the tips, one compartment with morocco labels gilt lined and lettered xvi , 386; x, 370. A handsome, clean and attractive set, the text still quite bright with only occasional minor evidence of foxing, very solid and sturdy, bindings tight and strong. The spines lightly mellowed as to be expected, the gilt is very vivid and bright, the calf with a little rubbing or eveidence of age. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE CORNERSTONE BOOKS ON AFRICAN EXPLORATION AND HUNTING. ".I was the first to penetrate into the interior of the Bamangwato country, and.my axe and spade pioneered the way, which others have since followed" (- from the introduction). This lively and entertaining book was very successful in its time and made the author "the lion of the season." Cumming was a reknown and experienced sportsman whose thirst for adventure could only be somewhat slaked in the unexplored wilds of the African continent.
