Enid Blyton. Five on a Treasure Island. Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1942.

Price: US$4873.30 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: HARDBACK - A very good or better book with a tiny area of fading to the tip and tail of the spine. There is a little mottling to the front and rear boards, as is common with this title, but the blue boards are clean and fresh. Internally, the inner text is lightly toned due to the paper stock used in the books publication, but overall clean with just a couple of foxing spots to the page block. Free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The dust wrapper is in very good condition with a chip to the tip of the spine, not affecting the lettering, also with a chip to the top centre of the front panel, with a slightly larger chip to the top corner of the front flap fold. There are closed tears, with associated light creases to the upper front and rear panels, with three small marks present to the rear panel. A very clean dust wrapper for its age with absolutely no restoration performed, with lovely colouring to the spine and to the front panel, also with a very clean rear panel. The dust wrapper has the wider flaps, denoting a correct first issue publication. The publishers printed price of 5/-net is present to the front flap.

Blyton, Enid. Five On A Treasure Island. London Hodder and Stoughton 1942, 1942.

Price: US$5847.96 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. Published by Hodder and Stoughton in London, 1942. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, with its iconic design from the hand of Eileen A. Soper, is strikingly bright on both panels, though has undergone some mild and highly professional restoration at the top and tail of the spine and along the top and tail edges of both panels. It has been neatly price clipped. The boards are so slightly bumped at the top and tail of the spine. There is a small stain to the front panel, which appears to be a rust stain. There is an impress from a previous owner's inscription to the front fly leaf. The internals are pristine and crisp and the text blocks, though slightly toned due to poor paper stock, are mostly free from foxing. Overall, this is a near fine copy of a wildly popular children's title. Rare in such a bright dust wrapper, due to its inherent fragility. It is the first book in The Famous Five series. It has been suggested that the book was influenced by L. T. Meade's 1892 book Four on an Island, which also recounts a story of four related children including a tomboy along with a dog living on a private island with a shipwreck.

BLYTON, Enid; illustrated by SOPER, Eileen A.. FIVE ON A TREASURE ISLAND. London: Hodder and Stoughton. August, 1942.

Price: US$6822.62 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. Original light blue cloth with black titles to upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with line drawings throughout by Eileen A. Soper. A very good copy, the binding firm with the usual bumping of the thin boards and mottling to the blue cloth. The contents, with a previous owner's name to the front endpaper and only the occasional foxing spot are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a few tiny nicks at the spine tips and a single short closed tear (without loss) to the lower spine fold. The dustwrapper remains very clean and bright, albeit heavily faded to the red lettering on the spine, and entirely without repair or restoration. Not price-clipped (5/- net to the lower front flap). An attractive, unsophisticated example, scarce thus. The first edition, first printing of the first adventure of the Famous Five. (Summerfield, Tony: Enid Blyton, An Illustrated Bibliography, Part 1, p.58.) Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
