HASKINS, Sam (Photographer). Five Girls.. New York: Crown Publishers, 1962.

Price: US$220.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition--i.e., 1962 copyright by Crown Publishers, Inc. and Samuel Haskins with no additional editions or printings being stated A VG+ folio (36mm tall x 27.5mm) hardcover book of figure photography in a G dust jacket. A prior owner's label is atop printed owner info in the upper corner of the front paste-down. Some tanning of the ffep opposite where the dj's front flap covered the front paste-down. The remaining unpaginated contents, which aside from a few pages of text consist entirely of b&w photography of five young women in various states of dress or undress are clean and securely bound. Orange cloth boards with white lettering on the spine and upper board. The boards are bumped in the bottom corners and lightly bumped in the upper corners. Library binding with just a hint of rubbing at the spine head and tail corners. There is also up to 1mm of slight fading at the boards' top edge. In other respects the boards are fine. The dust jacket, which is not price clipped ($10.00), has a 3.5 mm tear and related light flap-like crease in front near the head of the spine. There is a 1.5 mm closed tear in the corresponding area of the rear and a nick and/or very small--i.e., less than .5 mm--tear at the top of the rear flap's folded edge and the bottom of the front flap's folded edge. The front of the dj also has a 2 mm light crease in the middle 1 mm below the top edge and a touch of yellowing over what would be the front joint of the book. The rear flap has a couple of creases including a vertical one that runs 3 to 4 mm from the rear flap's edge. Other wear consisting of small areas of light rubbing to the dj's top and bottom edges and some slight curling towards the top and bottom edges. is minor. Still, the figures featured in the images on both the front and rear of the dj are unaffected by the edge or rear flap imperfections described above. NOT an ex-library copy. **Extra charges may be required to cover postage costs on an expedited and/or international order because of the size and weight of this book.

HASKINS, Sam. Five Girls. Crown Publishers Inc, New York, 1962.

Price: US$335.90 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: New York, Crown Publishers Inc., 1962 (presumably the first edition sheets; see our footnote). Large quarto, 143 pages with 130 illustrations (photogravures from photographs by Haskins). Grey papered boards lettered in red; a fine copy with the dustwrapper very lightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities, with only the bottom corner of the front flap price-clipped. The book was first published in New York by Crown in 1962; the text block of our copy appears to be that of the true first edition. The boards are lettered at the foot of the spine 'Bodley Head'; the dustwrapper carries the imprint of Crown on the spine. The foot of the front flap has the New York details of Crown Publishers, under which is printed 'Published in Great Britain by The Bodley Head .'. The first British edition identified as such on the title leaf appears to have been published in 1965. Curiously, the flap retains the (US) $10.00 price in the top corner, the bottom corner has been clipped of (presumably) its British price, and what is probably the originally selling price of '10 65' is lightly pencilled in the top corner of the front free endpaper. The first of Sam Haskins's groundbreaking photobooks.
