With two introductions explaining the origins, printing methods and modern scholarship of the First Folio. Bound in quarter bonded leather with pictorial cloth boards. Raised bands, gilt decoration. Complete with slipcase. This edition was designed and produced by the Folio Society in 2001 and 2006 using the sheets from W. W. Norton, as a 'brought in' volume it does not carry the Folio Society name within, though the 2001 edition had a tipped in note, this volume appears to be the 2006 issue. Small rubbing to one raised band, else volume is crisp and clean. Very good overall. *Due to size and weight, extra shipping fees apply to overseas orders*

Description: Second Edition; Cr. Folio; pp. xl, 928; b/w portrait, original quarter morocco wiht printed linen boards, 5 raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, silk page marker, printed slip-case, fine copy. The Norton Facsimile set a new standard for scholarly accuracy. It was the first facsimile in which every page had been selected from a large number of copies in an attempt to find a clean, clear example with minimal show-through. Even more important, it offered the latest, most corrected state of pages known to vary from copy to copy because of correction at press. Finally, it introduced a standard system of reference, "through line numbering," based on the lines printed in the 1623 edition rather than on the acts, scenes, and lines of a modern edition. These improvements, the meticulous work of the great Folio scholar Charlton Hinman made possible by the extensive Folger Library Collection, established The Norton Facsimile as an indispensable volume for book collectors and serious readers of Shakespeare.

Description: Publisher's full red cloth, spine in five compartments separated by raised bands and gilt borders, gilt lettering in three compartments, gilt tooling in remainder. Red silk marked bound in. Folio (376 x 251 mm). This is a full-size, photographic facsimile of the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays, which was printed over a period of two years and released in 1623. As printing of the First Filios proceeded, proofs were read and corrections were made. The uncorrected sheets were not thrown out, but were mixed in with the corrected ones, with the result that no two First Folios, of which there are 240 in existence, are identical. This edition reproduces pages from 29 of the most satisfactory copies, out of the 82 now in the Folger Shakespeare Library, originally selected by Prof. Charlton Hinman in 1968. In his Introduction, Peter W. M. Blayney reconsiders Professor Hinman's findings in the light of new Elizabethan scholarship. The volume includes all of the line numbering established in the 1968 edition, as well as the traditional Globe act-scene-line numbers. Professor Blayney's Introduction includes a table identifying the order the pages of each play were set, and the compositors believed to have set each page. This is a unique and invaluable tool for any serious Shakespeare scholar. The volume is in perfect, pristine condition, unmarked, tight, square and clean. The slipcase is also in perfect condition. A large, heavy book (11 pounds) - additional shipping charges may apply. AS NEW. . Facsimiles. Folio 13" - 23" tall. 928 pp
