The edges of the pages are a little darkened, and there is some light soiling to the gray cloth along the bottom edge of the spine. The price clipped jacket is very similar to the first issue jacket, except Hawaii and The Source are also listed along the foredge of the front panel, whereas the first issue jacket only lists Tales of the South Pacific. There is also a little wear at the spine ends, and slight fading to the colors on the jacket spine. The jacket is about 1/4" taller than the book. The book states "First Printing" and has no names or other markings in it.

James A. Michener. The Fires Of Spring. Random House, New York, 1949.

Price: US$95.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Stated First Printing, First Edition. This was Michener's second book. His first was Tales of the South Pacific which was the basis for the play and movie South Pacific. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright, no wear. There is almost no wear on the covers, a small thin crease off the front bottom edge and a small crinkle at the bottom edge of the spine. The cover edges are in very solid shape. So are the corners, no rubbing, pretty amazing for a book published in 1949. The page edges look very good. The middle page edge has one speck-sized spot, also one very tiny sliver of tan that just barely peeks over the edge of three pages. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in very nice condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I don't see any of what I would call conspicuous creasing. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. A good number of pages at the middle of the book have a tiny, vague semi-crease just above the tip of their bottom corners, the kind of crease that is created by perhaps a slight bump or bend, although I can not see either of these. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos so I don't need to detail the edge and corner losses. The front cover has some very light soiling, also several small tears off its bottom edge. There is one small tear at the edge of the spine and rear cover. Nothing is detached on the jacket and there are no repairs. The flaps are in pretty decent shape. They are mostly clean, one very small spot of the edge of between the front cover and front flap. There's also a very tiny closed tear a little ways below that spot. The loss at the front covers top corner extends just a tiny bit onto the corner of the front flap. The top edge of the rear flap has some wrinkling/crinkling. The jacket is NOT price-clipped ($3.50), not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for all the years I have owned the book. From the dust jacket: 'in The Fires of Spring James A. Michener, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize 1947 for his Tales of the South Pacific, has re-created the ever-varying chronicle of the struggle against poverty and spiritual hunger. He has done so in a manner that will attract everyone who was ever had a restless, yearning heart. But The Fires of Spring is far more than the drama of a groping young man. It is a rich segment of American life, a complex of longing and wisdom, saltiness, simplicity and compassion. It is youth's discovery of the beauty of ideas and the pleasures of the mind under the inspiration of fine teachers. It is the unfolding of the meaning of all kinds of small, unexpected sights and sounds and words and relationships. By enchantment and by harsh reality David Harper arrived at manhood.'
