Description: 4to, 16 pp.+ plates, Limited to 1500 numbered copies, signed (initials only as it was issued) by the photographer., Texts by Merle Armitage (who also designed the book), Robinson Jeffers, Donald Bear & Edward Weston himself. The first few pages and, to a lesser extent, the last few pages have some discoloration along the outer edges, not affecting any text or image. Front hinge is partially cracked, but holding well. The dust jacket is worn along the spine folds and is missing small chips at spine ends. Very good copy in fair dust jacket

Description: #1485/1500 copies, the whole edition, so annotated on a preliminary colophon, which includes an initialed pastedown by the photographer, as issued. Designed by Merle Armitage. A Near Fine copy in black cloth backstrap, black paper covered beveled boards, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper. Includes introductory prose statements by Armitage, Robinson Jeffers, Donald Bear [16pp.], and a concluding statement by Weston at end. 51 black and white photographic plates, includes one of Weston taken by his son Cole. Plates printed on rectos with facing numbered captions. Weston's second major monograph, following the one in 1932 [Wehye: The Art of Edward Weston]. Very slight rubbing to points and edges of boards, much less than usual for this heavy, but fragile book. Q09661

Edward Weston selected these fifty photographs himself, 'fifty of my favorite photographs chosen because they have lived well and because they have not been reproduced. in book form before. a well balanced selection from various periods and approaches, and from a wide range of subject matter.' Beautifully designed by Merle Armitage and printed by Lynton R. Kistler. A fine association copy, with the bookplate of writer and photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964). Small abrasion at lower corner of front cover, front hinge cracked, otherwise a fine copy, the spine lettering bright and crisp; a very good plus jacket with chip at top of spine causing the loss of some letters, other lighter wear at corners

Covers rubbed, with slight wear, at extremities; spine lettering rubbed and faded; 5 photographic leaves with cellotape repairs at corners, barely encroaching on images (2 with creases extending into corner of images). A good copy. "The photographs collected in this volume are fifty of my favorite photographs chosen because they have lived well and because they have not been reproduced (excepting certain annuals and magazine) in book form before." With a final image of the photographer at Point Lobos. Edition limited to 1500 numbered copies, initialed by Weston at the limitation, this being no. 1375. Provenance: "Inscribed for Lou Jacobs Cordially Edward Weston" in ink at the half-title.
