Lewis Carroll. Feeding the Mind. Chatto & Windus, London, 1907.
Price: US$96.62 + shipping
Description: A first edition of a delightful psychological musing by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The first edition of the work. With an introduction by English hymn writer and clergyman, William H. Draper. The work was simultaneously published in quarter cloth for 1s. and morocco for 2s. This fascinating lecture by Carroll (Charles Dodgson) is a rare example of the famously timid author's public speaking and was delivered to a clergy in Derbyshire in 1884. Upon completion of the speech, Dodgson handed the script (in his famous purple ink) to Draper, who, several years later, went on to have the work published. After the lecture was finished, it was during Charles Dodgson's stay in this vicarage when he was publicly outed as Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The fascinating lecture highlights the importance of constant mental stimulation, drawing the analogy between correctly feeding the body, to correctly 'feeding' the mind with information and knowledge. In a quarter cloth binding. Externally generally smart; edges are a little discoloured, and there is a mark to the spine. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

'A short paper or lecture delivered in Oct. 1884 in the Derbyshire vicarage of Alfreton before a public audience. It is a comparison of feeding the mind with feeding the body in such points as proper food at proper intervals (a "fat mind"), mastication by thinking over what is read, and mental appetite, all pervaded with quiet humour. Mr. Draper explains that the MS. Was handed to him by the author, and occasionally read out at Christmas time to friends' (Williams, Madan, Green, and Crutch). Typical of Carroll's admonitions is this: 'Mental gluttony, or over-reading, is a dangerous propensity, tending to weakness of digestive power, and in some cases to loss of appetite: we know that bread is a good and wholesome food, but who would like to try the experiment of eating two or three loaves at a sitting?' (p. 20). The text was first published in the May 1906 issue of Harper's Monthly Magazine in New York, before being published in book form in 1907 in wrappers at 1s (as here) and in limp gilt leather covers at 2s.Williams, Madan, Green, and Crutch 291.
