NANSEN, Fridtjof. Farthest North - The Norwegian Polar Expedition 1893-1896. U.K / George Newnes, 1898.

Price: US$58.51 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: A 2 volume set. / Nansen's three-year expedition to the North Pole with the Fram marked the beginning of the modern age of exploration. It describes his plan, ridiculed by his peers, to allow the specially designed Fram to become frozen in the treacherous pack ice of the Arctic Oceans. Drifting with the current, he and his crew of twelve would be carried to the Pole. Unfazed by the discovery that the plan is a failure, he sets out with a fellow crew member to cover the remaining distance across the ice on foot. It was to take them a further harrowing fifteen months during which they shared a sleeping bag of rotting reindeer fur and were forced to feed the weaker sled dogs to the stronger ones. They were to travel 146 miles farther north than any Westerner had gone before, representing one of the greatest single gains in polar exploration in four centuries. Illustrated with photography, drawings & maps. // This is a cloth-bound 2nd edition hardback set in good condition-the cloth of the 2nd volume is stained / each volume has the previous owners name on the 'front end-paper'. (936 pages & 23 pages of introduction in total). This is a heavy set nearly 2.5kg, so there will be an extra postage charge.

"His theory, that a drift-current sets across the polar regions from Bering Strait. towards the east coast of Greenland was based on a number of indications. His intention was to get his vessel fixed in the ice to the north of Eastern Siberia and let her drift with it." Although criticized, his plan succeeded. "His ship, the 'Fram' ('Forward'), was specially built of immense strength and peculiar form" in order to endure the ice-floes. "During the winter of 1894-95 it was decided that an expedition should be made northward over the ice on foot in the spring. Being satisfied that the 'Fram' would continue to drift safely," Nansen led the expedition to 86 degrees North, "the highest latitude then reached by man" (Britannica).

Description: Second UK edition, issued a year after the first, and is the first to be bound in the distinctive elaborately decorated cloth. This is the official account of the first Fram expedition of 1893-6, "a remarkable achievement in Polar exploration" (PMM). The expedition was undertaken "with the object of investigating the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice with the currents northwest from the New Siberian Islands across or near the Pole" (Arctic Bibliography). "Nansen returned to international acclaim not only for the voyage itself but for its results, proof of a deep Arctic Ocean, free of any land masses or islands, and extensive data on magnetism, zoology, and oceanography. His account of the journey, Farthest North, was a worldwide bestseller and prepared him for an effective life of diplomacy" (Books on Ice). Farthest North is beautifully illustrated from photographs and from Nansen's own sketches, for which he claims no artistic merit, but which are nonetheless highly atmospheric and effective. Like many of the polar books from the heroic age, this is a superbly produced work. Arctic Bibliography 11983; Books on Ice 5.2; Howgego III N3; Printing and the Mind of Man 384 (for the Norwegian edition). 2 volumes, octavo. Description: Second UK edition, issued a year after the first, and the first to be bound in the distinctive elaborately decorated cloth. This is the official account of the first Fram expedition of 1893-6, "a remarkable achievement in Polar exploration" (PMM). This copy has Nansen's signature, dated 19 February 1893, on a paper sheet sometime affixed to the front free endpaper. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, spines lettered in gilt, decorative details on spines in gilt and silver, front covers elaborately blocked in gilt, silver, and red. Chromolithographed plate, colour folding map, illustrations in the text, many full-page. Ownership stamp of one "E.M. Copland" on half-title in vol. I and title page in vol. II. Slightly rubbed and mottled, joints with minor cockling, endpapers toned, occasional spotting or offsetting. A very good copy.
