Fridtjof Hansen was a Norwegian explorer, a professor of zoology and oceanography, and a prime mover in Norwegian's independence from Sweden. In 1893, Nansen and Johansen set out to reach the North Pole. In their ship Fram, they made fast to an ice floe to the north of Siberia. After drifting north with the ice, they left the ship and pushed further in kayaks and sleighs, reaching the highest latitude thus far (86ø14ïN) in 1895. This is the record of that voyage and the fifteen month sleigh journey, copiously illustrated and including several of Nansen's own sketches. It includes an appendix by the captain of the Fram. No air-support, no satellite navigation - just awe-inspiring determination and a wonderful read. Heavy item - shipping supplement may apply for overseas. G : in Good condition without dust jacket. Nansen's Fram expedition of 1893-1896 was an attempt to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the natural east-west current of the Arctic Ocean. Nansen took his ship Fram to the New Siberian Islands in the eastern Arctic Ocean, froze her into the pack ice, and waited for the drift to carry her towards the pole. Impatient with the slow speed and erratic character of the drift, after 18 months Nansen and a chosen companion, Hjalmar Johansen, left the ship with a team of Samoyed dogs and sledges and made for the pole. They did not reach it, but they achieved a record Farthest North latitude of 86°13.6'N before a long retreat over ice and water to reach safety in Franz Josef Land. Meanwhile, Fram continued to drift westward, finally emerging in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Description: First edition, preceding the first edition in Norwegian of the same year. Nansen's expedition was a remarkable achievement in Polar exploration, undertaken to investigate "the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice with the currents northwest from the New Siberian Islands across or near the pole" (Arctic Bibliography). "Nansen returned to international acclaim not only for the voyage itself but for its results, proof of a deep Arctic Ocean, free of any land masses or islands, and extensive data on magnetism, zoology, and oceanography. His account of the journey, Farthest North, was a worldwide bestseller and prepared him for an effective life of diplomacy" (Books on Ice). Farthest North, the official account of the first Fram expedition, is beautifully illustrated from photographs and from Nansen's own sketches, for which he "claims no artistic merit," but which are nonetheless highly atmospheric and effective. Like many of the polar books from the heroic age, this is a superbly produced work. Arctic Bibliography 11983; Books on Ice 5.2; Howgego III N3; Printing and the Mind of Man 384; Taurus 24. 2 volumes, octavo. Original bluish green vertically ribbed cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt, pictorial block in gilt on front covers (of the Fram on vol. I and "Northwards though the Drift-Snows" on vol. II), top and fore edges untrimmed. Etched frontispiece in vol. I, photogravure frontispiece in vol. II, 127 plates of which 16 in colour, 4 folding colour maps, illustrations in the text; titles printed in red and black. Slightly rubbing and marking, front cover of vol. I sunned, occasional foxing, cracked to cords in a few places, 1 folding map with repair to stub (not affecting image). A very good copy with the gilt bright.

Nansen Fridtjof. FARTHEST NORTH: Being a Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship 'Fram' 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey.. Westminster Archibald Constable and Co. 1897, 1897.

Price: US$874.50 + shipping

Description: 2 volumes. First edition. 16 chromolithographic colour plates from Nansen's own sketches, 120 plates, a profusion of illustrations in text, 4 large folding coloured maps at the rear of the volumes. Royal 8vo, publisher's original turquoise green cloth lettered in gilt on spines and covers with gilt pictorial decorations of the Fram and a journey through the drift-snow on the covers of both volumes. 510; 671, including index pp. A very handsome set, the cloth is bright and well preserved with no fading whatsoever and only very light evidence of use or age, two corners just a bit bumped, internally very clean and solid and in excellent order, folding maps all very well preserved. A HANDSOME FIRST EDITION COPY of the account of this highly important journey to prove that a drift-current sets across the polar regions from the Bering Strait and the neighborhood of the New Siberia Islands towards the east coast of Greenland. Nansen's theory was based on a number of indications, not the least of which was the discovery of portions of the wreck of the "Jeannette" which had been lost off the New Siberia Islands in 1881 but which were found on drift ice off the south-west coast of Greeenland. His ship, the "Fram" was specially built of extraordinarily strong materials and of a design to be lifted by rather than crushed by the ice. The success of the theory, the expedition and the trek made northward over the ice on foot to a point farthest north is related in these two fine volumes. The text is accompanied by a profusion of fine illustration of which many are executed in color.
