Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Cover Art; This is the True First Edition (preceding the hardback copy by a month or so). This is a mass market paperback book (PBO) Book number 41, with a price of 35cents. This copy is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends, corners and spine joints of the book covers have some light bumping, rubbing and edge wear. The text pages are clean, but have noticeable generalized toning. One page sticks out from the text block a tiny bit, but is attached to the text block. "Fahrenheit 451 was written by Bradbury during the Second Red Scare and the McCarthy era, inspired by the book burnings in Nazi Germany and by ideological repression in the Soviet Union. Bradbury's claimed motivation for writing the novel has changed multiple times. In a 1956 radio interview, Bradbury said that he wrote the book because of his concerns about the threat of burning books in the United States. In later years, he described the book as a commentary on how mass media reduces interest in reading literature. In a 1994 interview, Bradbury cited political correctness as an allegory for the censorship in the book, calling it "the real enemy these days" and labelling it as "thought control and freedom of speech control." Bradbury, Ray. Fahrenheit 451', US signed and beautifully inscribed first edition. Ballantine, 1953.

Price: US$8332.91 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Ray Bradbury (1953) ‘Fahrenheit 451‘, US first edition, first printing, published by Ballantine Books. Beautifully signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: “For Elaine! With Good Wishes From Montag’s Friend Ray Bardbury | Nov. 14, 1974”. A superb inscription referring directly to Guy Montag, the book’s protagonist. As a bookworm, of course the author would be Montag’s friend. Also, notice that the book was signed in 1974 long before Bradbury suffered a stroke after which his handwriting became less legible. The book is housed in a quality quarter-bound red leather solander case with the title, author and specifications on the spine. Condition: a near fine book in a very good minus dust jacket. The book is internally clean without any previous owner’s scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Slight rubbing to edges from sliding in and out of the shelf as usual. Clean page block edges, and the boards also show the vibrant red colour with all lettering present and NOT rubbed out. The dust jacket is the correct first issue dust jacket. It has been price clipped, and as usual is faded on the spine, and somewhat on the front panel. Professional fortification tape has been applied to the folds on the reverse as shown. Fahrenheit 451 is one of the best known dystopian science fiction novels of the 20th century and is globally read and studied in schools. The old mantra ‘collect what you read in school’ still applies and first edition copies of this landmark novel have strongly appreciated in value over time. The novel was given the retro Hugo for best novel in 1954, the most prestigious prize in the science fiction genre. The topic and quality of writing transcend simple marketing genre bounderies and the book is widely acknowledged as a masterpiece of literature. It was adapted several times into film (1966; 2018), TV, theatre, radio, and other print media. First and Fine

Price: US$10000.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, red boards, front and spine panels stamped in yellow. The hardbound trade issue. (Currey binding D [no priority]). A short novel expanded from the novella "The Fireman" published in 1951. "While the jet bombers boom overhead and another nuclear war threatens, Americans live a mindless life in a society where everyone is encouraged to lose himself in such distractions as four-wall television, hearing-aid radios, high-speed travel, and group sports. Life is reduced to the paste-pudding norm of a mass audience, for it serves the purpose of the government to keep people from thinking . The gadget are, of course, marvelous and everywhere, while the greatest enemies of the status quo are books, which, when they are occasionally discovered, are burned by firemen who are, in this fireproof age, no longer needed to put out fires, but to set them ." - Hillegas, The Future as Nightmare, pp. 158-9. "In a totalitarian state, books are burned and private thought or action is criminal." - Gerber, Utopian Fantasy (1973), p. 159. Filmed in 1966 by Francois Truffaut. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-153. [viii], 199, (3) pp. Johns-Manville Quinterra asbestos binding, lettered in red. Fine, with light ambient toning to the boards, light offsetting to the front free endpaper and contents lightly tanned. In a Fine dust jacket, with absolutely no fading (we have never seen one without fading); two micro-tears to the edge, a minuscule crease to the top corner of the rear panel and trivial rubbing at the folds. The classic dystopian, anti-censorship novel, plus two short stories "The Playground" and "The Rock Cried Out." A sought-after signed limited edition with the dust jacket extremely uncommon in such impeccable condition. Truly a sight to behold.
