Description: First edition. Folio. 646, [2]pp., including the half-title leaf. Lacking both boards, much of the calf spine back is perished, with five original raised bands. The upper back corner at the head of spine is browned and frayed, with partial damage at the corner of the final letterpress leaf (printing the table), else a good, sound copy suitable for rebinding.

Description: Oversized hardcover folio. This is a twentienth century binding, professionally and beautifully done, with brown calf leather spine and maroon title label (which might be original to an earlier binding). Marbled paper over boards. Sturdy appropriate new endpapers. First page present is the title page, dated 1700. There is a dark stain on the title page that bleeds through to the next couple pages before fading away. 646 pages plus single leaf with index numbered 565. Wide margins and clean pages, with only very minor foxing and normal toning from age. Contains sections of Ovid, Homer, Chaucer and more - considered some of Dryden's greatest translation work. Description: The first edition of John Dryden's collected fables. In a very smart contemporary mottled calf binding. These translations are regarded as one of Dryden's greatest works. This was the final work produced by Dryden, as he died two months later. The work contains translations of the First Book of Homer's 'Iliad', eight selections from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', three of Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', three stories from Boccaccio and many more translations including original poems by Dryden himself. With this work Dryden aimed to increase the reputation of English literature, by adapting these classic works. All the translations to this work are in Dryden's heroic couplet. With the bookplate of the Marquess of Headfort to the front pastedown with his family arms. Possibly the bookplate of the Taylour Family, either Thomas Taylour the 1st Marquess Headford or Thomas Taylour 2nd Marquess of Headfort. A lovely, first edition copy of this important work. In a contemporary mottled calf binding. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Fading to the gilt at the spine. A few small worm holes to the rear board, with the leather lifting slightly at the bottom of the joint. Leather is lifting to the head of the front joint. Description: Folio, pp. [648.] A nice clean tall copy with the half-title; with some minor foxing. Bound in contemporary calf (chipped, front cover separate), Bookplate. Macdonald 37a. NCBEL II 447. Pforzheimer 326. Wing D2278. A collection of some twelve thousand verses, which "again show Dryden's energy of thought and language undiminished by age" (DNB), including paraphrases or translations of the first book of the ‘Iliad', some of Ovid's ‘Metamorphoses', and tales from Chaucer and Boccaccio. There is also a poem ‘To my Honoured Kinsman John Driden', verses addressed to the Duchess of Ormond, and lines on ‘A Fair Maiden lady who died at Bath' [the wife of Lord Abingdon]. The preface, written in fine prose, contains an excellent appreciation of Chaucer as well as attacks on Milbourne and Sir Richard Blackmore, and a reply to Jeremy Collier's attack on the stage.
