Description: The last novel by the father of Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) and the husband of Mary Wollstonecraft (A Vindication of the Rights of Woman) and one of the founders of modern anarchism and education. This American edition was issued in two volumes; the British edition was spread over three. iv, [13]-210, [2 publisher's ads]; 204, [12 publisher's ads]. First US editions (first printings). Very good copies in the publisher's original cloth spines with paper labels and plain boards. Previous owners' names on front cover and pastedowns. One endpaper missing a two square inch piece.

Two 12mo. volumes, untrimmed. 212;225 pp. Publisher's advertisements are bound-in at the start of the first volume and at the end of the second volume, [4] and [8] pp. respectively. (Among the titles on offer are Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Jane Austen's Emma, which is listed as "in press.") Contemporary publisher's binding: dun paper boards, brick linen back with paper label. Early and possibly contemporary ink ownership (Geo. A. Botts) and a mid-twentieth century bookseller's label (Claitor's of Baton Rouge, LA) on front pastedown in each volume. Bindings show general rubbing and soiling, are sunned on spines, and the labels are abraded and nearly illegible. Volume 1 is missing the rear fly-leaf and a blank, and one leaf (p. 103/4) is torn but without loss. Text is quite clean but for a couple of foxed leaves in each volume. A very good and sound copy in contemporary bindings. Rare.

Description: 2 vols. 8 x 5", original cloth backed boards, ads + 201pp; 197pp + publisher's ads, covers well worn with some soiling and red ink marks, extremities bumped, volume 1's paper spine label 99% gone with a couple of very small holes in spine; volume 2's spine label abraded but readable, modern bookplates inside front covers, light staining and foxing throughout, some blue pencil scribbles on rear blank endpapers, top 1" of first page in volume 1 ("A", ads) clipped off with some loss of text on verso, page 201-202 (blank) of volume 1 similarly clipped-off with loss of page number and subtitle missing; top 1" of title page of volume 2 also clipped (with no loss of text); else a good, readable, collectible copy of this very highly sought-after FIRST AMERICAN EDITION (with "Shelly" insead of "Shelley" as author); only two copies in NUC!
