Rare Rackam illustrated classic features eight lithographic plates in colour. A classic tale of Norway. The story of Erica, a girl who believes in water sprites, wood demons and the spirit of the wind, Nipen. These beliefs are presented as figments of her imagination, yet real fears she has. Through her suffering, real and imagined, and the adventures of her friend, Rolf, it is a joy to watch her mature into wisdom. Employs colourful characters, from old, blind Peder and his wife Ulla to the young rambunctious Oddo. Set in the sweeping northern landscape of Norway, especially the "seater", where the Norse drive their cattle each spring to feed upon the mountain wildflowers, to make a particular cheese. Equally appealing to boys for the bravery of the men in daring rescues, fighting pirates, being stranded on an island and caring for the farm. And, to girls, as Erica must overcome her fears and hardships. Portable 5 1/4" x 7 1/4" design. Printed at The Temple Press, Printers, Letchworth. 128 pages. Insured post. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Description: Publisher's original blue cloth pictorially and ornamentally stamped in gilt, gilt lettered and ornamented spine with E. P. Dutton & Co. at foot and onlaid color plate ("It came nearer and nearer, and at last quite up to the can of ale" (frontispiece)) to upper board. Original pictorial dust jacket (also with E.P. Dutton & Co. at foot), printed in green. With all the plates in color, in an unrecorded binding variant. Octavo (7 x 5 in; 178 x 127 mm). 128 pages. A Fine copy in the very scarce dust jacket (jacket slightly chipped at top and bottom of spine). Both Latimore & Haskell and Riall note binding in red or green cloth but not blue, as here. The half-title reads: Tales for Children from Many Lands Edited by F.C. Tilney. "I have seen a copy that causes a confusion as to which is the 1st edition. The cover has a label pasted over 'With Coloured Illustrations by Arthur Rackham' to change the title to 'With coloured illustrations ,' and on the title page there is no mention of 'Coloured by W. Cubitt Cooke.' There may have been a mistake of ommitting the the colouring had been done by another on the title page so the pasted plate was added to the cover until the 2nd. issue" (Riall). Just to complicate matters further - our copy has "Coloured Illustrations by Arthur Rackham" on the front cover, no mention of Cubitt Cooke on the title-page - but there is a small erratum slip which is tipped-in over the List of Illustrations which reads: "Erratum / Title Page / The illustrations in this volume are reproduced from line drawings by Arthur Rackham, but the pictures have been coloured by W. Cubitt Cooke." Latimore and Haskell 43. Riall 122.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Description: Publisher's original blue cloth pictorially and ornamentally stamped in gilt, gilt lettered and ornamented spine with "Dent London" at foot. Onlaid color plate to upper board and blue cloth label with "With Many Coloured Illustrations" pasted over small rectangular panel. Original pictorial dust jacket (with "J.M. Eight color plates, including frontispiece (all dated 1899). Cubitt Cooke. There may have been a mistake of ommitting the the colouring had been done by another on the title page so the pasted plate was added to the cover until the 2nd. issue" (Riall). Just to complicate matters further - our copy has the label on the front cover AND Coloured by W. Cubitt Cooke on the title-page. In the first edition of 1899 [The Temple Classics for Young People], the twelve plates, with the exception of the frontispiece, are in black and white, and the title page thus lacks the credit to W. Cubitt Cooke. Riall 122.
