Description: First Edition, 1944. Limited to 1/1617 copies. Clean and tightly bound in black cloth. This Arkham title was the first appearance of Frank Utpatel's classic "haunted house" logo on the title page. Slight smudging, small bump at spine base and several very faint stains to fore edge, still Very Good. Previous owner's bookplate on front endpaper and "Woodworth's Bookstore" stamp affixed to the inside of the back board, otherwise contents are clean. The dust jacket art was designed by the author's brother Howard Wandrei. The dj has faded from original blue to tan (except at flaps), the spine is missing 3" at the base, some overall edge wear and old tape on reverse side, Good only.

The price-clipped DJ is Brodart-protected. Very good to good DJ has mild patchy rubbing and toning to spine; 2 small chips missing: at top corner of DJ back (1/4"); and a narrow 1/8" strip at top of spine. Book has my name-stamp on front pastedown (beneath DJ flap) but otherwise a solid, unmarked, very good to near fine copy. Purchased from Richard Miller (San Diego, CA) in March, 1982.
