Condition: Good

Description: Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, 1909, 1909. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 121 pages with tissue guarded frontispiece illustrated by Albert Levering. Octavo (8" x 5/12") bound in publisher's red cloth with cream lettering to spine (barely discernible) and cover, pictorial cover of a sea captain riding a spherical rocket ship through space done in black, grays and white. (BAL 3511; McBride 234) First American edition. Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven is a short story that appeared in print in Harper's Magazine in December 1907 and January 1908, and was published in book form with some revisions in 1909. Captain Stormfield was inspired by Captain Edgar Wakeman, a sea captain Twain met in 1866; Wakeman's eccentric character and personality made a tremendous impact on the young man, and he is the model for several Twain characters besides Stormfield; Wakeman's retelling of a dream he had in which he visited heaven was the source for the story. Originally written in 1868, the year Twain heard about Wakeman's dream, the story went unpublished over the next three decades, with slight changes made by the author during that period. Twain's vision of Heaven, and the journey required to get there, subverts most of the traditional Christian views of the place. Corners bumped, spine soiled and sunned, head and tail fraying, previous owner's name in neat ink script on front end papers. End papers show some soiling; with the exception of a good smudge at p 109 text block shows just moderate occassional soiling. No dust jacket.

Twain uses this story to show his view that the common conception of Heaven is ludicrous, and points out the incongruities of such beliefs with his characteristic adroit usage of hyperbole. Twain, Mark [Samuel L. Clemens]. Extract From Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven.. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1909.

Price: US$600.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, second state of the last work published by Twain during his lifetime with C-F on the copyright page. Octavo, original half cloth over pictorial boards, paper spine label, frontispiece in blue and white. In very good condition. Although not published until 1907 in Harper's Magazine, followed by a slim book version with some revisions in 1909, the story was quite old. The original manuscript dated back perhaps as far as 1868, and an 1873 version has survived. The story was revised several times, and chapters 3 and 4 of the manuscript became the Harper's story. Longer versions of the manuscript have subsequently been published, including one edited by Dixon Wector which appeared as part of Report from Paradise (1952), and in part 1 of Mark Twain's Quarrel with Heaven: "Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven" And Other Sketches" (Ray B. Browne, ed., 1970). Twain claimed that the story in its early version was a satire of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward's The Gates Ajar, a very popular novel published in 1868.
