MILL John Stuart. An Examination of Sir William Hamilton's Philosophy and of the Principal Questions discussed in his writings. , 1865.

Price: US$735.77 + shipping

Description: First edition. 8vo. viii, 560 pp. Original purple cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers panelled in blind, brown coated endpapers, edges untrimmed (light wear to extremities, spine faded and gently creased at tips, notwithstanding a very good copy). London, Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green. Mill's devastating, book-length critique of the Scottish philosopher Sir William Hamilton's (1788-1856) Lectures on Metaphysics and Logic (1860), regarded by many as Mill's ?most serious onslaught on transcendental belief? (ODNB). Although Hamilton's philosophy is now little-known, the book contains various themes central to Mill's thought, including: ?Mill?s analysis of Matter in terms of 'permanent possibilities of sensation', his confessedly abortive analysis of personal identity in similarly phenomenalist terms, his analysis of free-will and responsibility, and his ringing declaration that he would not bow his knee to worship a God whose moral worth he was required to take on trust - all these still find their place in contemporary discussions of empiricism? (Alan Ryan, Introduction to Vol. IX of Mill's Collected Works). Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription of 'J. M. Marshall' to recto of front free endpaper; later ownership inscription of Ernest Thorp, Professor of Modern and Political Thought at the London School of Economics, dated 'Cambridge, 1959' to verso of front free endpaper. MacMinn, Hainds & McCrimmon, p. 96.

Price: US$825.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition. 8vo, in the publisher's original oxblood-brown cloth paneled on the boards in blind and gilt lettered on the spine. Neat private name on half-title, and minor sunning to the spine, otherwise about a fine copy. FIRST EDITION OF MILL'S ATTACK ON SIR WILLIAM HAMILTON METAPHYSICAL PHILOSOPHY. To the destruction of Hamilton’s philosophical reputation, Mill’s Examination contributed a great deal. Mark Pattison, reviewing the Examination in The Reader, exclaimed: "The effect of Mr Mill’s review is the absolute annihilation of all Sir W. Hamilton’s doctrines, opinions, of all he has written or taught. Nor of himself only, but all his followers, pupils, copyists, are involved in the common ruin. The whole fabric of the Hamiltonian philosophy is not only demolished, but its very stones are ground to powder. Where once stood Sebastopol bidding proud defiance to rival systems is now a coast barren and blue, sandheaps behind and sandhills before." Within this text Mill also expounds his most important ideas on religion. "The Book focused the whole controversial energy of the period belonging to the two opposed schools, the intuitional and the empirical. it became the leading text-book of that psychological philosophy which had been adumbrated by Hume. It is a work that shows Mill's powers at their most mature state".

Description: 8vo. pp. viii, 560. complete with half-title. A fine untrimmed & partly unopened copy in original blind & gilt-stamped plum cloth (former owner's name-stamp on title, faint foxing to half-title, final leaf & free-endpapers). First Edition. It is in the present work that Mill makes his most famous pronouncement on religion. Discussing the use made by one of Hamilton's philosophical followers, Henry Mansel, of Hamilton's view that we cannot know the Absolute, Mill criticized in particular Mansel's theory that even the moral terms we apply to God do not mean what they mean when we apply them to men. Mill not only objected to this theory on logical grounds, but argued that a being, no matter how powerful, whose acts are not sanctioned by the highest human morality conceivable, is not deserving of worship: "I will call no being good.who is not what I mean when I apply that epithet to my fellow creatures, and if such a being can sentence me to hell for not so calling him, to hell I will go." "The book focused the whole controversial energy of the period belonging to the two opposed schools, the intuitional and the empirical.it became the leading text-book of that psychological philosophy which had been adumbrated by Hume. It is a work that shows Mill's powers at their most mature state." (Sorley, History of English Philosophy) Jessop p. 138. NCBEL III 1552. Rand I p. 373. cfEinaudi 3900 (5th edn. only)
