Description: This may have been the first Dublin edition.The second volume only. Containing An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding, A Dissertation on Passions, An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, and The Natural History of Religion. A New Edition. (6) 527 pp. In a contemporary calf binding, six panelled spine with some modest gilt decoration and the original gilt blocked red morocco spine label, some edge-rubbing, wear to lower spine extremity, some wear overall, eleven pages have some old wormhole damage to the bottom margin, some light brown spotting here and there, but overall a good tight clean copy. The tile page bears the signature of Narcissus Batt. Batt 1767-1840 was a leading Belfast merchant, a founder of The Belfast Banking Company, and builder of Purdysburn house.

Thick 8vo, pp. [iv], 571 [572 blank]; [viii], 527 [528 adverts], full contemporary calf, spines richly gilt, joints fairly strong with light wear and holding well, full mottled tree calf with light wear to top and bottom of spines, with two color morocco title spine labels on each volume in red and green, quite handsome, though loved and lightly worn This was the first edition of Hume's Essays and Treatises to be published in Ireland after his death in 1776 and contains new essays.
