(154) pp. Enoch Arden is a narrative poem published in 1864 by Alfred Tennyson, who was then the Poet Laureate of Great Britain. The story on which it was based was provided to Tennyson by Thomas Woolner (English sculptor and poet who was one of the founder-members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood). The story involves a fisherman who is shipwrecked at sea for more than a decade, and returns to find that his wife and children and moved on in love and life. The poem lent its name to a principle in law that after being missing a certain number of years (typically seven), a person could be declared dead for purposes of remarriage and inheritance. Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809- 1892) was an English poet. He was the Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign.
