Tall thin 4to. 152 pp. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in quarter vellum over beige buckram boards with a gilt line illustration to the upper cover, top edge gilt. 58 wood engravings. Toning to the vellum with a little light wear to the edges of the boards, foxing to a handful of leaves including one of the full page engravings at p.81, an attractive copy overall. A little sporadic foxing to contents. A wonderful copy.

Buckland-Wright's greatest work and one of the most important Golden Cockerel publications, it was begun in 1943 but not completed until late 1947.Franklin, p.229.

Description: The sole UK printing of this illustrated edition published by Golden Cockerel Press, London in 1947. Number '383' of 500 copies issued on Arnold's hand-made paper with the Golden Cockerel Press watermark, of which one hundred copies were specially bound in vellum at Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The vellum spine with gilt titling has a few lights spots. The cloth boards with gilt decoration are clean. The binding is tight. Top edge gilt. Free from inscriptions. Some light sporadic toning to the page edges in places, more so to pages 12-15, 90-91 and 132-133, and the rest mild - all copies appear to have been affected with this to some degree, and it does not particularly detract. Profusely illustrated throughout with engravings by John Buckland-Wright. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. One of the highlight productions from the Golden Cockerel Press. One hundred copies specially bound in vellum at Sangorski and Sutcliffe - however this is not numbered nor signed, but is from that part of the run. VG minus.

Number 77 of 100 specially-bound copies signed by the artist, from an edition limited to 500, wood-engraved illustrations. Buckland Wright took over four years to produce this work and it is considered to be his masterpiece. "His wood-engravings for this book have a romantic beauty that could hardly be surpassed and, as there are no less than 58 of them, they make a particularly sumptuous volume".
