Condition: New

Beckett, Samuel. En attendant Godot [Waiting for Godot]. Les Editions de Minuit, Paris, 1952.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A Very Good copy of the first trade edition, following the 35 signed copies. A fragile softcover book. Front wrapper reattached and a tear repaired on p 29. Spine creased and a bit toned, text block also a bit browned, as often. One of the masterpieces of 20th century theatre - Beckett's hugely influential tragicomedy. Beckett had originally written the play in French between the Fall and Winter of 1948-1949. (Beckett would not translate the play into English until its London premier, in 1955) In fact, this edition of the play - the Minuit edition - was released in 1952, before the play's first performance the next year. Beckett was thought to have been inspired to write the work after viewing Caspar David Friedrich's painting "Mann und Frau den Mond betrachtend" (Man and Woman observing the Moon). Upon its French premier, the play was met with positive reviews and though it was first received somewhat coldly in London, it would soon become a popular and critical success there and worldwide. Some critics, like Norman Berlin, credit the play's wide appeal to its "stripped down" nature - its simplicity encourages a myriad of readings and interpretations that otherwise could not exist. Beckett would later win the Nobel Prize for Literature and "Waiting for Godot" appears on Le Monde's list of the "100 Books of the Century." "It arrives at the custom house, as it were, with no luggage, no passport and nothing to declare: yet it gets through as might a pilgrim from Mars. It does this, I believe, by appealing to a definition of drama much more fundamental than any in the books. A play, it asserts and proves, is basically a means of spending two hours in the dark without being bored." (Contemporary Observer review from the famed drama critic Kenneth Tynan.). Very Good.

Beckett, Samuel. En attendant Godot. Les Éditions de Minuit, Paris, 1952.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First trade edition (after 35 signed copies on large paper), one of 2,500 copies. 162, [4] pp. 8vo. Beckett's masterpiece, and one of the defining works of the 20th century. A major innovation in modern drama, possibly the most important play of the 20th Century, and certainly the first theatrical success of the Theatre of the Absurd. Waiting for Godot was the play that secured Beckett's lasting fame. No matter that he'd been publishing since the 1920s or was Joyce's amanuensis. This play, in which "nothing happens," set him on a course that led to the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. Overall, a very well-preserved copy: these trade editions from Les Éditions de Minuit are delicate in construction and notoriously fragile. Federman & Fletcher 259; En français dans le texte, 395 Original printed wrappers, with author's photograph and blurbs on rear wrapper. A very good plus copy, the pages skillfully opened without damage to the margins, the spine toned and lightly cockled, and with narrow shadow along top edge of front wrapper, paper somewhat toned as usual First trade edition (after 35 signed copies on large paper), one of 2,500 copies.

Price: US$4186.85 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, trade issue, scarce in such nice condition. This masterpiece of absurdist theatre and 20th-century literature was published on 17 October 1952. The theatrical premiere took place at the Théâtre de Babylone in Paris on 5 January 1953. Its extraordinary success "was responsible for Beckett's rise to worldwide fame, as the play rapidly became an object of intense international interest and controversy" (ODNB). The trade issue consisted of 2,500 copies bound in the fragile wrappers. There were also 35 numbered copies issued on vélin supérieur and designated "L'edition originale". Beckett's own English translation of the work appeared two years later, published in New York by the Grove Press. Federman & Fletcher 259. Octavo. Original white wrappers, spine and covers lettered in blue and black, blue rules to covers, small photographic illustration of author on rear cover, edges untrimmed. Gentle vertical crease to spine, negligible soiling to wrappers, toning to contents as usual, otherwise clean. A near-fine copy.

BECKETT, Samuel.. En attendant Godot. Pièce en deux actes.. Paris Les Éditions de Minuit, 1952.

Price: US$5445.00 + shipping

Description: First trade edition, first printing (only preceded by the private edition of just 35 numbered copies); small 8vo; somewhat browned internally as always with the papier courant issue; original wrappers printed in blue and black, in the very early, if not original glassine, very light vertical crease to backstip but an absolutely stunning copy and rare thus; contained in a custom-made, blue cloth drop-down box. The best copy we have handled of what is effectively the earliest obtainable manifestation of Godot; a beautiful thing. Written between October 1948 and January 1949, the play was not produced until January 1953, with Roger Blin directing at the Theatre de Babylone (the English language version premiered some two years later in London). First published in September 1952 by Les Editions de Minuit, ahead of the first full performance, only 2500 copies were printed. Thirty 'reviewers came to the générale of En attendant Godot before the public opening. Contrary to later legend, the reviewers were kind. Some dozen reviews in daily newspapers range[d] from tolerant to enthusiastic. Reviews in the weeklies [were] longer and more fervent; moreover, they appeared in time to lure spectators to that first thirty-day run' (Cohn, From Desire to Godot). Federman & Fletcher 259.

Beckett, Samuel. En attendant Godot [Waiting for Godot]. Les Editions De Minuit, Paris, 1952.

Price: US$20000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY BECKETT on the title page; one of the most influential works of modern drama. "Voted the most significant English language play of the 20th century in a British Royal National Theatre poll of 800 playwrights, actors, directors and journalists. Beckett's naked play about two tramps waiting for Godot has tapped into our 20th-century public consciousness. It seems to express our deepest fears and our deepest knowledge of ourselves and our predicament" (Norman Berlin). Notably, the first edition of the text provided the public with their first experience of the complete play-Les Editions de Minuit published it three months before the play's debut (in French) in January 1953. "The first production of Beckett's own English translation, directed by Peter Hall, was staged at the Arts Theatre Club in London in August 1955. Kenneth Tynan's and Harold Hobson's reviews made it into an intellectual hit which has since been regarded as having transformed the British stage" (DNB). Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1952. Octavo, original wrappers; custom half-leather box. Text in French. Some browning and rubbing to spine. Extremely rare signed.
