There are some tears at the top of the jacket spine in the "unsupported area" where the jacket is taller than the book. There is also some minor dampstaining at the bottom edge of book and jacket. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the top edge. The dust wrapper is the first state, correctly showing just the Greene and Carter reviews on the rear panel. It is not price clipped. The boards are free from notable wear and the text blocks are bright and clean throughout. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition. Awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Like Ballard's earlier short story "The Dead Time" (published in the anthology Myths of the Near Future), it is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard's experiences in World War II. The name of the novel is derived from the etymology of the name for Japan.
