J. G. Ballard. Empire of the Sun. A Novel.. Victor Gollancz, London England, 1984.

Price: US$46.20 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardback. First Edition. Previous owners initials and date written neatly to inside cover. Very slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. Japan invaded China in 1937, and by late 1941 the European inhabitants of Shaghai's International Settlement had become almost accustomed to life in their fragile island of neutrality, witnessing the brutal reality of Japanese occupation from the safety of their palatial homes and American limousines. For eleven-year-old Him born and raised in Shanghai, this was the real war. Events in Europe, glimpsed on flickering newsreels, were as exotic and unreal as the Hollywood epics they preceded. Based on events J. G. Ballard witness while interned in Shanghai during World War II, this book is an extraordinary and original addition to the modern literature of war, a novel worthy to stand in the company of All Quiet on the Western Front and The Naked and the Dead. The horros and privations of the Japense internment caps, as seen through the eyes of a child to whom they are part of normal life, are presented unflinchingly; yet the novel is written in prose which is often lyrical and even beautiful. Empire of the Sun is both a radical departure from J. G. Ballard's previous fiction and the triumphant crowning achievement of his career to date. 278 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.)
