(p. XI ff.). -- "After a career in the military, Arthur Jermy Mounteney Jephson (1858-1908) became an adventurer and African explorer, and most notably took part in the ill-fated Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886 to 1889 headed by Henry Morton Stanley. Emin Pasha was the German-born Governor of southern Sudan's province of Equatoria. A private relief mission was proposed to 'rescue' Emin Pasha after losing contact following revolts in the province. The expedition went up the Congo River, taking an extremely challenging route. This resulted in the group suffering severe losses due to disease and hunger and once Emin Pasha was found, it transpired that he did not wish to be rescued at all. After being held prisoner by rebel officers for several months, Arthur eventually escaped and he returned to England in 1890. Although there was initial recognition for the mission, criticism developed as the true human cost of the trip became clear. After his return, he wrote two books about his experience, he was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society of London and he became a queen's messenger in 1895. Arthur died aged 50 [.] in 1908 [.]. He was a member of the notable Jephson family of Cork, Ireland" (berkshirerecordoffice org uk: Posted in This months highlight on 23 Jul 2021, online). -- NETTOGEWICHT / Net weight / Poids: 1.2 kg - VERSANDKATEGORIE / Weight category / Poids brut 2 kg - Sprache: de

A few splits are along the fold lines of both the map and facsimile letter. A Very Good copy. A gripping, first-person account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (c. 1886-1889). Written by Arthur Jephson (1859-1908), an English merchant and army officer who accompanied Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904) on his infamous expedition. Emin Pasha (1840-1892) was an Ottoman physician and naturalist of German-Jewish descent. While he began his career as a doctor and naturalist, he later became the governor of Equatoria, an Egyptian province on the upper Nile. As noted by its name, the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition was purportedly undertaken to rescue Emin after Muhammad Ahmed and his forces had surrounded Equatoria. Stanley, who led the expedition, insisted it was strictly a relief or rescue mission, but the events that unfolded showed that Stanley, as well as other party members, also viewed the expedition as a way to annex African territories. The expedition was initially praised for its ambition, but it soon became mired in infamy and notoriety when news broke out of the numerous deaths resulting from it (only about one-third of the party made it back). Further complicating the expedition was that Emin, when he was finally found, did not initially want to leave. Emin was eventually convinced to leave for the coast in 1888. This account was written from a point of view that has mixed feelings about Emin and his actions. Jephson also writes about other parts of the expedition such as the party's interactions with local people, the natural scenery, the hardships the expedition faced, and the many brutal conflicts and atrocities he witnessed. Chapter titles are as follows: "Start to Find Emin," "Meeting of Stanley and Emin--Plans Discussed," "From Wadelai to Dufile," "Trouble Impending," "The Bari Tribe," "Beginning of the Rebellion," "Our Imprisonment at Dufile," "Steamer Journey with Rebels," "The Rebel Council," "Arrival of the Mahdi's Forces," "Prisoners on Parole," "Flight from Wadelai," "Susspense at Tunguru," "News of Stanley at Last," "Start to Join Stanley," "Emin's Relief," and "Conclusion" [Jephson summarizes the character of Emin and relays other parts of the expedition such as the mistreatment of women and Zanzibari refugees by some of the party and the near-fatal fall Emin took from a two-story building after becoming inebriated at a celebratory event in Bagamoyo].

Brown coated endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with two photogravure plates and with 21 engraved plates, with numerous in-text engravings. The rear pocket contains a folding map and a folded facsimile of the Mahdi's letter. Howgego S60. Mounteney-Jephson was an officer selected by Stanley to assist in the relief expedition for Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer). He was included in the expedition thanks to a 1,000 pound donation from his cousin the Countess de Noailles, to whom this book is dedicated. Stanley and his men sailed up the Congo, and then marched through the Ituri forest, as the other routes to the province of Equatoria were blocked. Stanley lost 180 men in the forest to disease and injury, and the expedition is regarded as one of the most grueling in history. They did eventually rendez-vous with Emin Pasha, but Pasha was only too happy to continue occupying the settlement that he created, so he was reluctant to leave. Eventually, however, his soldiers rose up and revolted against him, and he became a prisoner in territory previously controlled by him. In the end, 1,510 people left the region and Stanley and his men and Emin Pasha and his followers formed a large caravan that would make its way to Suez, after mapping Lake Albert Edward Nyanza (a lake that blocked their path because its existence was not known to them). A bright and attractive copy of a thrilling and complicated tale of equatorial travel. Each photogravure plate has a small dampstain on its fore-edge, the spine has a minute dent but the book is otherwise beautiful.

SCARCE TRUE FIRST EDITION. An engrossing account of Mounteney-Jephson’s travels and harrowing experiences in the Equatorial Province from 1888-89 with Emin Pasha. He recounts in riveting detail the harsh and unfair treatment he received while in Emin’s territory and indeed of his long imprisonment there. His book revealed an unknown side of the governor’s leadership style in Africa, one which was weak and ineffective. "It was not until I had witnessed many deplorable examples of his weakness and vacillation that I began to lose faith in his judgment, and it was not until afterwards, when I had conversed frequently with his people and himself about things in his province, and the repulse of the Mahdi’s forces four years before, that I found out that Emin had only told part of the story."-Preface. Mounteney-Jephson was actually sent on the mission to Emin Pasha by Henry Stanley who wrote the Prefatory Letter and also revised and collaborated on the writing of this book. An important narrative of early English governing in Equatorial Africa.
