Description: Octavo, [23cm/9.25inches], full ebony-embossed lemon drop-coloured cloth sans dust jacket, pp. 296. Illustrated with pen & ink drawings throughout. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Katharine M. Rogers, the author of L. Frank Baum: Creator of Oz, (2002), noted The "explicitly socialist" economy of Oz has been contrasted to other "fantasy" projections of socialist societies, like Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888) and William Morris's News from Nowhere (1890). How far such analyses and comparisons should be pursued is, of course, open to debate; as Baum writes of the social structure of Oz in Chapter Three, p. 31, "I do not suppose such an arrangement would be practical with us." There are also strong similarities between The Emerald City of Oz (and to a certain extent the other Oz books) and the 1915 feminist utopia Herland (novel) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Today probably best known for The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman was, like Baum, a newspaper editor who used her publication as a platform for social reform. The literary connection between Gilman and Baum is thought to be another campaigning newspaper editor, Matilda Joslyn Gage, the women's rights activist who happened to be the mother of Baum's wife, Maud Gage Baum. Sally Roesch Wagner of The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation published The Wonderful Mother of Oz describing how Matilda Gage's feminist politics were sympathetically channeled by her son-in-law into his Oz books.

Price: US$550.00 + shipping

Description: Large octavo, original dark blue cloth stamped in silver and black on spine panel, colour pictorial paper label on front panel, pictorial endpapers. Frontispiece and fifteen additional full-page tipped-in colour plates embellished with green metallic ink, along with numerous line-drawings in the text, all by John R. Neil. This copy has the two main issue points to identify the first impression: the publisher's advertisement on the verso of the ownership page lists five titles, and the volume measures 1¼ inch thick. Of two noted bindings (dark-blue and light-blue), the dark-blue binding is the scarcer (no priority of issue known). PRESUMABLY, A BAUM FAMILY COPY; WITH THE OWNERSHIP PAGE SIGNED "Frank J" [likely Frank Joslyn Baum, eldest son of L. Frank Baum], and a later signature in permanent marker: "J Baum" [ likely his son, L. Frank Baum's grandson Joslyn Stanton Baum]. Small corner bumps, light wear at edges, minor rubbing to cloth, tiny scratches to the pictorial paper label on the front panel. The front free endpaper has been professionally reaffixed (it was sitting loose and had slight wear). Internally really fine, with beautiful plates (all 16 colour plates are present). A lovely copy. Note: We have not been able to confirm the signatures, this copy is offered as 'Presumably a Baum Family copy", although it sure looks right to us. The First Edition of the Sixth OZ Book. Frank Joslyn Baum (1883 -1958), Eldest son of L. Frank Baum, lawyer, soldier, writer, and film producer, and the first president of The International Wizard of Oz Club.
