There are several small areas of chipping with loss and a few small tears to jacket edges. The green cloth covers are a little shelf worn and tanned to edges with lightly bumped corners and spine. Kay Thompson (born Catherine Louise Fink; 1909 1998) was an American author, singer, vocal arranger, vocal coach, composer, musician, dancer, actress, and choreographer. Thompson, who lived at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, became most notable as the author of the Eloise series of children's books. The Eloise character was developed by the author based on her childhood imaginary friend and alter ego, with a voice in which Thompson spoke throughout her life, according to her biographer, filmmaker Sam Irvin. Thompson's goddaughter, Liza Minnelli, was often speculated as a possible model for Eloise. The four books in the series, each illustrated by Hilary Knight, are Eloise, Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmastime and Eloise in Moscow. They follow the adventures of a precocious six-year-old girl who lives at The Plaza. Hilary Knight (born November 1, 1926) is an American writer and artist. He is the illustrator of more than 50 books and the author of nine books. He is best known as the illustrator and co-creator of Kay Thompson's Eloise (1955) and others in the Eloise series. This large format book is in near-fine condition in a near-fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. The illustrations, including a double fold-out of Moscow, are wonderful.
