Canto XXXVI is a particularly beautiful and lyrical Canto partly containing a translation of Cavalcanti s canzone Donna mi pregha . The XI conclude with an ode to Mussolini and a lament on war. This copy is Gallup A37a. First edition, first issue; Farrar & Reinhart; [1934]. Black cloth boards letter in silver down the spine; end-papers. Blue dust-jacket printed in blue and black. 1500 copies printed of which 500 were used for the second impression by New Directions. The book is in fine condition; some very minor bumping at corners. Dust-jacket partial and defective.

Condition: Near Fine, with inscription to front free endpaper dated October 1937, and quoting from Canto XXIX. *** Ezra Pound (1885-1972) was a key figure in modernist literature, being the editor for T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" (1922), and a promoter of James Joyce's early works, "Dubliners" (1914) and "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916). It is said that he reduced the size of "The Waste Land" by half - so that Eliot dedicated the work to Pound thus: "For Ezra Pound / il miglior fabbro" (the "better craftsman"). *** Pound's magnum opus was his epic 800-page poem, "The Cantos" published at various dates (c1917-1962). Like Eliot's work and Joyce's, The Cantos is both erudite and wandering, referencing amongst many others: Homer, Dante, the Medici family, Venice, the American founders Jefferson and Adams (the subject of this volume), Siena and its banks, China, Confucian writings, Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, and the writings of St. Anselm.
