All plates are present and in very good condition (a couple are creased). Edmund Dulac was a French British magazine and book illustrator and stamp designer, primarily known for his illustrations in the novels of the Brontë Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books such as 'King Albert's Book' (1914), 'Princess Mary's Gift Book', and this text, his 'Picture-Book for the French Red Cross'. In a yellow cloth binding. Externally, sound with some shelfwear. Bumped to head and tail of spine. Marks to boards. Joints starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean. Offsetting to front and rear endpapers. Very Good

This volume comprises fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sinbad the Sailor, Blue Beard, and many others.Edmund Dulac was a French British naturalised illustrator. He moved to London in the early 1920s and received his first commission to illustrate the novels by the Brönte's sisters. After the war, the deluxe children's book market shrank, so the illustrator turned to illustrate magazines among others.Profusely illustrated with nineteen tipped in illustrations, stunning and bright in colour, by Edmund Dulac, as well as the author's portrait to the rear volume. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with only minor shelfwear and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. With Charles E B Long's bookplate to the front pastedown and a small inscription by a previous owner to the front free endpaper "1939 ? Replaced during second Great War," undated. A fine copy in the d/w which has a 2" chip out at the top of the spine, a smaller chip at the foot and has tears but is still good. The d/w is the only indication that this is the issue done for Canada withi "Hodder & Stoughton Limited,17 Wilton Avenue, Toronto" printed in dark green at the bottom of the upper panel of the d/w. The sheets and binding are as the first U.S. edition noted by Hughey 39a. A scarce issue.

Light soil, a 2 inch closed tear at front joint, two cut-out circles of about an inch on front cover, not affecting text, light soil. Frontispiece and color plates are tipped-in on taupe paper with pale green borders, slightly age toned at edges. Frontispiece is slightly creased at left edge of plate. There are 20 plates, the last being a b/w portrait of the artist.
