This volume came from the collection of private press books built up by the Tomkinson family. Michael Tomkinson (1841 - 1921) established Tomkinson Carpets in Kidderminster and was a major collector of books and Japanese antiquities. Although some of his collection was sold after his death his son, Geoffrey (1881 - 1963), continued and grew the private press collection and published 'A Select Bibliography of the Principal Modern Presses Public and Private in Great Britain and Ireland' (1928). When Geoffrey died in 1963 his son Kenneth (1918 - 1985) continued to add to two generations of Tomkinson family private press books. This collection was recently broken up and sold. Charles Robert Ashbee (1863 - 1942) was an English designer and a prime mover in the Arts and Crafts movement. Ashbee set up the Essex House Press after William Morris's Kelmscott Press closed in 1897. He took on many of the printers and craftsman who had been working at Kelmscott Press. Ashbee designed two type faces for Essex House (Endeavour and Prayer Book) both of which were based upon Morris's Golden Type. This volume is printed using Endeavour and includes six songs together with their melodies (the melodies being mainly 17th or 18th century). A rare and intriguing book with an interesting provenance.
