The first side reads: 'And it is wonderful that even today with all competition of records, of radio of television, of motion pictures, the book has kept its precious character. A book is somehow sacred. A dictator can kill and maim people, can sink to any kind of tyranny and only be hated, but when books are burned, the ultimate in tyranny has happened. Description: This voulme was a part of a Ladies Library Association collection, the only marks of which are an ownership plate on the front endpaper and a card pocket on the rear endpaper. Square and soloidly bound although there is a cracked hinge at the title page. The title page also has a small dark smudge at lower left. Boards are clean with minimal qwear at corner tips and head and foot of spine.Foredges and pages slightly toned. Interior pages are unmarked. DJ (now under protective cover has no library markings. Minor soiling (especially on rear panel.) Wear at head and foot of spine, along spine creases and edges, along flap creases and corners. The dust wrapper, with the author's portrait to the rear and no photo credit, has some mild chipping to the top edge and some rubbing at the hinge. There is a mild tear to the tail of the spine which could be seamlessly repaired. The dust wrapper is unrestored. In this instance, it has not been price clipped and shows the original $4.50 net price. There is slight spotting and handling marks. This aside, the wrapper is bright and highly presentable. The boards are free from notable chips and marks, with typical light bumping to the spine tips. This copy is free from previous owner's ink and correctly shows the word "bite" present on page 281, line 38. The text blocks are mostly immaculate, but with a small darkened area to the bottom right-hand corner. Overall, this is a near fine copy of a fine and increasingly scarce title. The work is regarded by many to be Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and by Steinbeck himself to be his magnum opus. A key identification point, this book has bite on page 281, mistakenly changed from the original word, bight, during proofreading. The book is presented in its original dust jacket, which is unclipped and has Steinbeck's photo on the rear with no blurbs. East of Eden is considered one of Steinbeck's most ambitious works and a classic of modern American literature. Steinbeck claimed the novel has everything in it I have been able to learn about my art or craft or profession in all these years. I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this (Salinas Public Library, 45). CONDITION: Very good condition. 8vo.
