Steinbeck, John. And it is wonderful that even Today. [Book Mark: Books Make the Perfect Gift Visit Your Local Bookseller]. [Viking?], 1952.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Unrecorded and presumably rare piece of Steinback ephemera (which we date to 1951/1952), located in a first edition of 'East of Eden', 1952, and printing a Steinbeck text excerpted from his 'Some Random and Randy Thoughts on Books' which appeared the prior year in 'The Author Looks at Format' (American Institute of Graphic Arts, 1951). The first side reads: 'And it is wonderful that even today with all competition of records, of radio of television, of motion pictures, the book has kept its precious character. A book is somehow sacred. A dictator can kill and maim people, can sink to any kind of tyranny and only be hated, but when books are burned, the ultimate in tyranny has happened. This we cannot forgive. People. automatically believe in books, This is strange but it is so. Messages come from behind the controlled and censored areas of the world and they do not ask for radios, for papers and pamphlets. They invariably ask for books. They believe books when they believe nothing else. - John Steinbeck' The second reads: 'Book Mark [decorative rule] Books Make the Perfect Gift Visit Your Local Bookseller' [decorative rule].

John Steinbeck. East of Eden. Viking, 1952.

Price: US$124.99 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of America s most enduring authors, in a commemorative hardcover edition In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called "East of Eden" "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families the Trasks and the Hamiltons whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. The masterpiece of Steinbeck s later years, "East of Eden" is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean, and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah s Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century." The first trade edition states "First published by The Viking Press in September 1952" on the copyright page with no statements of subsequent printings, and 1952 on the title page. Boards are light green. The first state has "bite" on page 281, line 38. This was corrected to "bight" during the first printing and stands corrected in subsequent Viking printings. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first state (with bite, line 38 page 281), lacking dustjacket. A bright clean copy. No names, inscriptions or bookplates.

Description: In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. The masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah's Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and the one which he considered his magnum opus. Price: US$2226.04 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. Published by the Viking Press in New York, 1952. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, with the author's portrait to the rear and no photo credit, has some mild chipping to the top edge and some rubbing at the hinge. There is a mild tear to the tail of the spine which could be seamlessly repaired. The dust wrapper is unrestored. In this instance, it has not been price clipped and shows the original $4.50 net price. There is slight spotting and handling marks. This aside, the wrapper is bright and highly presentable. The boards are free from notable chips and marks, with typical light bumping to the spine tips. This copy is free from previous owner's ink and correctly shows the word "bite" present on page 281, line 38. The text blocks are mostly immaculate, but with a small darkened area to the bottom right-hand corner. Overall, this is a near fine copy of a fine and increasingly scarce title. The work is regarded by many to be Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and by Steinbeck himself to be his magnum opus. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years," and later said: "I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this."
