SPENDER, Stephen.. Poems.. Faber and Faber, London., 1935.

Price: US$481.04 + shipping

Description: Second printing of the second edition. Octavo. 69 pages. From the author's library with his bookplate, designed by John Craxton, on the front pastedown. On the title-page is a presentation inscription from Cyril Connolly: ' ''Wanton Adonis, Watson's Heyre'' from C.C.'. The quotation comes from a reference in 1595 by William Covell to Shakespeare, and no doubt alludes to Peter Watson, art editor and bankroller of Horizon. Spender was the magazine's associate editor in the early days and remained Connolly's close collaborator. On the front free endpaper is the ownership signature of Lys de la Tour Dunlap, who married in 1938 and became Lys Lubbock. In the 1940's she was Connolly's secretary and mistress. Six of the poems are marked and annotated by Spender, sometimes extensively, presumably in preparation for the 1955 edition of his Collected Poems. One can only imagine that Spender had mentioned to Connolly that he couldn't find his own copy of this book.Joints splitting. Good. No dustwrapper.
