Handsome edition of Joyce's first book of prose, which together with Fitzgerald's Tales of the Jazz Age (1922) and Hemingway's In Our Time (1924), ranks among the finest collections of short fiction produced in the first half of the twentieth century. The collection's fifteen stories, written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, portray a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle-class life in Dublin; arranged chronologically, the collection begins with stories of youth, and culminates in the masterfully-written story "The Dead."
