Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Dred; A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp [first English edition]. London. Sampson, Low, Son & Co, 1856.

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. Bound in faded terra-cotta cloth with blindstamped borders and cartouche. Gold lettering on the spine. Binding good and tight although corners bumped and cloth at the front hinge (top inch) is beginning to wear through. Title page dated 1856. No date on the copyright page. 524 pages + 12 pages of Sampson, Low advertisements at the rear. This English edition contains a 4 page preface that was not included in the US edition. Stowe's follow-up to Uncle Tom's Cabin, Dred was a success in terms of sales, but it is largely unread and overlooked at this point, because it did not have the sweeping cultural reverberations that the earlier book caused. This is a nice, first printing, first edition copy in original, unrestored condition. Ads at the rear are uncut. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it’s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.
