Description: This is Stowe's second anti-slavery novel and it followed Uncle Tom's Cabin. Old owner name & inscription in ink dated 1876 on end paper, which has bled through to cause some ghost imaging to title page of volume 1. Contents generally bright & clean, with the occasional bit of foxing. Some cover wear, especially at extremities and spine ends. Original black/brown cloth with blind stamped holly decoration on covers, pale yellow end papers with ads. This set seems to be a mixed state, as many copies are--probably assembled hastily by the publisher to meet the demand for this follow up to her novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Volume 1 is first state printing with an additional 6 pages of advertising, no battering to type on p. 209 & the d lines up with r above it in line 3 on page 88; vol. II seems to be a second state printing as it has "the Dicksons and the Ruskins" on page 370, 9 lines up. 2 vols. Ref: Wright 2391; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Our set contains the first printing, first edition of volume one, with the correct alignment on page 88. Our volume one is in binding A, with blank yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Our volume one has the battered text on page 209. Our volume two is the second printing with "the Dickinsons and the Ruskins" on the final leaf. Our volume two's binding is the same as that of our volume one but has publisher's advertisements printed on its endpapers and pastedowns. Stowe's second antislavery novel, informed by contemporary criticisms of her previous work, Uncle Tom's Cabin. In this novel Stowe condemns the institution of slavery, rather than individual enslavers. Two court cases dominate the plot: Stowe portrays how the law in the American south was used to oppress Black individuals. The author also explores the setting of swamps and how they concealed those who escaped enslavement. Dred constitutes a multi-faceted examination of one of the greatest travesties of American history. General wear to spines' crowns and heels, and a small puncture to the rear board of volume one. Volume one with a dampstain to its title page and a few faint red pencil marks.

Stowe's novel Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp was published by Phillips, Sampson & Co. in 1856. It was apparently translated into German for the immigrant population and published at the same time. The German edition exists in a two volume format (just like the first edition) and this scarcer version which combines the two volumes into one binding ( while keeping both of the original title pages).

Condition: Very Good

Description: 8vo. vi, 7-329, [6], v, 370 pp. Stowe's follow-up to "Uncle Tom's Cabin", also dealing with slavery, with a more militant angle on the topic than its better known predecessor. Both volumes rebacked, with original spines preserved and quite inconspicuous that anything was done at all. Volume II has neat tear along hinge of both front and rear endpapers. A few minor, light and occasional fox marks; overall clean and tight. Dust jackets are early if not original, and they match the cloth on the slipcase. Slipcase remains solid as box. The leather has rubbing, and there is wear on the corners of the cloth. Notwithstanding these issues, the slipcase together with the dust jackets and the attractive condition of the books make for a handsome package. Blindstamped Cloth; Quarter Morocco Slipcase

Harriet Beecher Stowe. Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp. Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1856.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Phillips, Sampson and Company, Boston, 1856, first edition. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 - 1896) was an American abolitionist and author and is best known for her novel “Uncle Tom's Cabin” (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions for enslaved African Americans. “Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp” is her second novel and was of a more documentary nature than “Uncle Tom's Cabin”. Stowe and her husband were active participants with the “underground railroad”. This is a two-volume set, volume 1 – 329 pages, and volume 2 – 370 pages. Bound in dark, embossed cloth the extremities are chipped and worn. The books themselves are quite solid. There only a few pages that are stained lightly and they are in volume 2. Overall, a very good set of anti-slavery books.

STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Dred; a tale of the great Dismal Swamp. Phillips, Sampson & Company, 1856.

Price: US$499.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: 1856 Harriet Beecher Stowe 1ed DRED Dismal Swamp Nat Turner Slavery Abolition 2v Known mostly for her cultural defining work ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin,’ Harriet Beecher Stowe presents "Dred," her second novel. Although it enjoyed better initial sales than her previous, and more famous, novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, it was ultimately less popular. Uncle Tom's Cabin drew criticism from abolitionists and African American authors for the passive martyrdom of Uncle Tom, and the endorsement of colonization as a solution to slavery. ‘Dred,’ on the other hand, introduces a black revolutionary character who is presented as an heir to the American Revolution rather than a problem to be expatriated. "Dred" offers a gripping narrative that not only captivates readers but also serves as a fervent plea for social change, making it a significant contribution to the abolitionist movement and a testament to Stowe's literary prowess. This rare first printing is a complete 2 volume set with the appendix of anti-slavery papers, Nat Turner confessions! Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: FIRST EDITION, THE SLATER COPY. 329,(six pages of ads); 370. Two volumes 8vo, uniformly bound in dark brown blind-stamped cloth; the gilt stamping on the spine bright and fresh; one signature slightly sprung in volume I., otherwise the closest thing to pristine I've ever see for this follow-up by Stowe. What is it they say about sequels? Well, this one sold well at first but it lacked the power of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Either one quite unreadable for me.

Stowe, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Dred; a tale of the great dismal swamp. Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1856.

Price: US$510.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: A perfectly serviceable set of hardcover copies, complete in two volumes; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Measuring 8 5/8" tall by 5" wide, bound in publisher's brown cloth, blind-stamped illustrations (of holly leaves) to front and rear panels, gilt lettering to spines. Moderate rubbing to and some scuffing of tips, spine heads and feet. Forward cock to both spines. Mild soiling to endpapers, light foxing to texts, some tide-lining here and there, including at endpapers, stitches showing at gutters here and there, some pulling of signatures but still holding firm. Splitting of cloth to rear bottom joint of Volume II, and to bottom two inches of Volume I rear panel. From BAL entry #19389, appears to be an apparent later printing of the First Edition, as the Preface by Stowe was not present in either the first issue of the American First Edition or in its English equivalent. Neither is there damage to p. 209 of Volume II, battering here and there, the phrase "the Dicksons are fewer" appears on p. 370, nine lines up, but without mention of the Ruskins, etc. Volume I, p. 88 does not feature the stereotypic bleeding of the "d" in "dictatorial" to the "r" in "rather" on lines 3 and 2, respectively, from the top. Like the A binding of the true First Edition, the blind-stamped holly leaves here are bordered interior by 20 embossed dots. Set up and stereotyped by Hobart & Roberts of Boston, published by Phillips, Sampson and Company, with "1856" appearing at copyright page. Harriet Beecher Stowe's second antislavery novel wasn't just a sequel to Uncle Tom's Cabin, published four years prior, but rather, was written in direct response to criticisms of it by both white Southern slavers and those in support of it, and by black Abolitionists and sympathetic white liberals. Here, Stowe explores the issue of slavery from an enslaved African-American perspective told in dialogue between not-yet-woke "Nina Gordon," the defacto mistress of a slave plantation in North Carolina, and "Dred," a black revolutionary and Abolitionist. Thus ensue trenchant discussions of race and racism, the institution of chattel slavery, and the seeming impending violence needed to end it. Dred is not an acquiescent Christian martyr "Uncle Tom" figure, nor the inherently falsely conscious Stepen Fetchit character he is tar-brushed with. Whether an apocryphal story or not, a quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln is that, when he met finally met Harriet Beecher Stowe, he said, "So you're the little woman that started this great war!" Volume I: [3], iv [1], vi [1], 8-329 [6 pp. of publisher's ads]; Volume II: [5] pp. Frontis matter, 6-370 pp., including three appendixes: Nat Turner's Confessions (Appendix I), Death of Hark (Appendix II), Church Action on Slavery (Appendix III). The beginning pages to the second two appendixes are misrendered in the Table of Contents.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
