[Henry Vincent Yorke, writing as:] GREEN, Henry (1905-1973). Doting. Hogarth Press, London, 1952.

Price: US$135.00 + shipping

Description: First Impression of the author's final novel. Small 8vo: [4],252pp. Publisher's aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gold, top edge stained yellow; Lynton Lamb illustrated dust jacket, priced 11s/6d. Better than Near Fine (dust-soiled top edge, front edge lightly spotted, but binding square and tight), pages clean and unmarked; about Fine jacket (tips of spine panel lightly rubbed). A collectible copy. Written almost entirely in dialogue (a technique that has drawn much appreciative comment), Henry Green's comedy of manners exposes the deceptive difference between those who love and those who "dote." Stuck in a passionless marriage, a middle-aged, upper-middle class man living in post-World War II London becomes infatuated with a much younger woman. Their relationship sets into motion a series of intertwining affairs among five close friends less concerned with love than with their attempts to keep the other lovers apart. "Green's later years were characterized by depression, heavy drinking, and destabilising affairs. . . . What was desultory or even sordid in Green's private life, however, again provided grist for his creative mill." GREEN, Henry (Yorke, Henry Vincent). Doting. Hogarth Press, London, 1952.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: Original pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped), acquamarine green cloth, with gilt-stamped titles on spine. Open chip to head of spine of dust jacket, affecting one letter of text, some additional small chipping and closed tear to top of jacket. Very light shelf wear to edges of cloth. Dust jacket illustration by Lynton Lamb. Still, a neat and tidy book. Simply put, "Doting", is about an open marriage that is going swell until the husband chooses a woman 25 years his junior. (Bad form.) Green pairs simple moments with his usual genius for symbolic and distinctive dialogue. Sometimes compared to Evelyn Waugh, both authors were more than likely results of the dry and withering wit reserved exclusively for post-war England. Green's final novel.

Description: First edition, first impression, of the author's last published novel, this copy remarkably well-preserved, with the scarce Book of the Month wraparound band retained. Henry Green was the pseudonym of Henry Vincent Yorke (1905-1973). "In his last three novels, Concluding (1948), Nothing (1950), and Doting (1952), the concerns of story and plot are sidelined in the construction of texts that circle constantly around the figures of desire and decay", issues with which Green toyed throughout his nine novels (ODNB). Octavo. Original green-blue cloth, titles to spine in gilt, top edge red. With dust jacket and Daily Mail Book of the Month wraparound band. Neglible rubbing to board edges, light offsetting to endpapers, a near-fine copy, uncommonly bright, in the excellent jacket, unclipped, with faint toning to spine, slight creasing and nicks to edges, slight spot to front flap, small instance of tape-repair to verso of wraparound band.
