Beautifully bound in full red leather with simple ruled gilt border to the front and rear boards and ornate gilt decoration and titles to the spine. The leather does show a little surface wear especially to volume two although generally in good condition. All edges of the text block marble with marbled endpapers. Pencil signature to the first blank page to both volumes. Pages lightly toned although very clean throughout with no marks or foxing, beautifully illustrated. Overall a lovely set. Medium brown mottled calf, gilt triple rule on the outer edges and gilt stamped design in all 4 corners of front & back boards. 5 raised bands, red leather label with gilt title & author's name above black leather label with gilt name of translator & number of vol between 1st and 3rd band on spine. Elaborate gilt stamped designs between bands above & below labels. At the bottom red leather label with date. Headband on top and bottom of each vol. Top edge gilt. Gilt dentelle on the inner edges of both vols. Marbled endpapers. Front board of vol. 2 starting but holding. Minor shelf wear. Internally very good. Original binding as issued.
