Charles Dickens. Dealings with the firm of Dombey and Son. With the four portraits of Edith, Florence, Alice and Paul.. Bradbury & Evans, London, 1848.

Price: US$229.45 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens with illustrations by H. K. Browne (Phiz) Published by Bradbury & Evans in 1848. A First Edition bound from the parts. Size: 8 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches. Page number: 624. Hardcover. Marbled paper boards with embossed calfskin spine and gilt lettering. with 38 full page black and white illustrations that include the 'dark plate' on page 547 (see image)*, the four portraits of Edith, Florence, Alice and Paul, plus frontispiece and vignette. Condition: Good. The boards are worn and the spine scuffed and rubbed through at the top edge; but the whole still holds together well. The endpaper, frontispiece and title page are marked by damp, and the plates browned, foxed and marked. The title page and frontispiece are probably the worst affected by foxing; but all are to some degree. A few engravings have historic repairs to the fore edge and other places where there has been damage, and that of Edith has actually been backed with another piece of paper. The pages of script are occasionally marked by foxing most particularly those at the front and the back of the book. Those in the middle are generally clean. * Dombey & Son contains the first published example of what was known as dark plate. It was created using a machine process which tinted the etched plate and so heightened the black and white contrast.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: xvi+624 pages with frontispiece and extra illustrated title and illustrations by H K Browne ("Phiz"). Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in half navy calf over marbled boards. First edition in book form. Dombey and Son is a novel by Charles Dickens, published in monthly parts from 1 October 1846 to 1 April 1848 and in one volume in 1848. Its full title is Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale, Retail and for Exportation. Dickens started writing the book in Lausanne, Switzerland, before returning to England, via Paris, to complete it. Illustrations were provided by Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz'). There is some evidence to suggest that Dombey and Son was inspired by the life of Christopher Huffam, Rigger to His Majesty's Navy, a gentleman and head of an established firm, Huffam & Son. Charles Dickens' father, John Dickens, at the time a clerk in the Navy Pay Office, asked the wealthy, well-connected Huffam to act as godfather to Charles. This same Huffam family appeared later in Charles Palliser's 1989 The Quincunx, an ambitious homage to the Dickensian novel form. As with most of Dickens' work, a number of socially significant themes are to be found in this book. In particular the book deals with the then-prevalent common practice of arranged marriages for financial gain. Other themes to be detected within this work include child cruelty (particularly in Dombey's treatment of Florence), familial relationships, and as ever in Dickens, betrayal and deceit and the consequences thereof. Another strong central theme, which the critic George Gissing elaborates on in detail in his 1925 work The Immortal Dickens, is that of pride and arrogance, of which Paul Dombey senior is the extreme exemplification in Dickens' work. Condition: Text block detached from backstrip, rubbing to boards, scattered foxing, ephemera indicating that the book belonged to one of Dicken's partners tipped to front end paper else a good to very good copy.

Description: FIRST EDITION WITH ALL BUT ONE OF THE FIRST ISSUE POINTS - Octavo, 8-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Three-quarter tan calf & marbled boards with gilt elaborate decorations in gilt and raised bands on the spine as well as a gilt titled red leather label. The covers are rubbed and slightly scuffed with minor wear to the edges and corners. All edges are marbled. xvi, [ii] & 624 pages plus an errata slip, illustrated with 40 plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), including a frontispiece and an additional pictorial title page. A couple of signatures [i.e. group of pages] are lightly pulled. There is scattered foxing, particularly in the margins of the plates. Good. "First edition, with all but one of the first issue points. The first issue points present in this copy of the book are as follows: a) The errata leaf following page xvi has 2 lines; an inserted errata slip has 12 lins. b) The title vignette and the illustration following page 238 erroneously have Capt. Cuttle's hook on his left arm; c) On the "List of Plates" on page xv, the frontis and the title vignette have no page entry; d) Further on page xv, line 2 there are no quotation marks around the words "the party"; e) Ten lines up from the bottom on page 14 there is no apostrophe in the word "aint"; f) On page 26, line 11 the word "fidgety" is mis-spelled "fidgetty"; g) On page 40, lines 16-17 the words "shewed' and "shew" are printed for "showed" and "show"; h) On page 284 five and six lines up from the bottom the word "Delight" replaces the word "Joy"; i) On page 324 in the last line the word "Captain" is mis-spelled "Capatin"; j) On page 426, line 9 the word "if" is not present; k) On page 582 the last line lacks a period. The only later issue point we have been able to determine is that the page number "431" is present on that page. The "dark plate" by Phiz, "On the Dark Road", is in superb condition with minor foxing in the margins. "According to Valerie Lester Browne, this was Phiz's first attempt at a classic 'dark plate', in this case to show the futility of the villainous Carker's trying to cheat death as he makes his way through France to Paris and thence to England. If he cannot escape Dombey on the Continent (where he fears Dombey can easily hire assassins), he rationalizes that it would be better to confront Dombey in a country less lawless. The March 1848 illustration, moreover, engages the viewer with the sharpness and vivacity of the figures and the prancing horses horses having been from his earliest compositions one of Phiz's strengths." - quoted from The Victorian Web.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Finely bound by Morrell in three-quarter green morocco, all edges gilt, spines with intricate details and raised bands, marbled end papers. An excellent copy overall, with four additional portrait plates bound in, depicting characters from the novel. Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial careerâ€"concerns about family duty, class position, child welfare, and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company, he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization, and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise (and its perils) is the railroad. In chapter six, Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." Dombey and Son grapples with the effects of industrialization, and the railroad is one of the novel's symbols for this momentous era. Near Fine.

DICKENS, Charles.. Dombey and Son. With illustrations by H. K. Browne.. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848, 1848.

Price: US$956.06 + shipping

Description: 8vo, xvi, 624 pp., engraved frontispiece and title and 38 etched plates (mostly lightly foxed or browned, as usual), one plate with small piece missing from outer margin (just touching image), original green cloth, spine faded and with a slight crease down the centre, four or five tiny frayed spots at extremities, inner hinges slightly cracked, but firm, housed in a green cloth folding box. First book edition; bound up from the original parts, but removing the half-title and errata leaves as is often the case. This copy is in Smith's "variant" binding, as used for copies bound from parts. Because of their bulkiness and susceptibility to wear, the larger one-volume novels of Dickens (Pickwick, Nicholas Nickleby, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Little Dorrit), are notoriously difficult to find in anything approaching fine condition in the original cloth. The present copy is tight and fresh, and well-above average for a copy in cloth. Smith, Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth, I, 8.

Description: First edition in of Dickens’ novel of “Pride,” with 40 etchings by Hablà t Knight Browne (“Phiz”). Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With 40 engraved plates including frontispiece and engraved title by H. K. Browne. In near fine condition. The work "has a sense of the numinous, is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things, than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception, so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end, so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" (Ackroyd, 526). The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" ("On the dark Road," in part 18), created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate, creating heightened contrast (Johannsen, Phiz, 309).

DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Dombey and Son [Original Cloth]. Bradbury & Evans, 11 Bouverie Street, London, 1848.

Price: US$1024.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition in book form of Dickens's seventh novel, in original cloth. With the half-title. 8vo: (iii)-xvi,[2,errata],624pp, with the engraved title page ("Dealings with the firm of Dombey and Son, wholesale, retail and for exportation") and 39 etched plates (with none of the inferior lithographed plates made as substitutes, after the etched plates were insufficient to meet demand) by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), including a "dark plate" and four other horizontal plates (both innovations). Original diaper-grain green cloth, skillfully rebacked with spine laid down, pale yellow end papers, engraved title (dated 1848) preceding printed title. Errata leaf follows List of Plates in this copy. A very early issue, scarce in the publisher's original cloth, including most points of Smith's first issue, with Captain Cuttle's hook on left hand (title-page vignette), no page entry for frontispiece and vignette on p. xv, and "Delight" on p. 284, but with corrected spelling of captain on p. 324. An excellent example, pages and plates bright and fresh, with only trivial foxing and marginal toning (three plates more significantly affected). Smith I 8. Eckel, pp. 74-76. Podeschi (Gimbel Collection) A103. Grolier Dickens 155. Sadleir I 687. Johannsen (Phiz), pp. 241-308. First published in twenty monthly parts between October 1846 and April 1848, then complete in this single-volume edition. Smith calls "On the Dark Road," in which the "smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel, . . . a fine example of the dark plate process [and the first ever published]." (Smith) Dark plates were created using a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its contrast. John Forster, Dickens's biographer, thought there was nothing in all of Dickens's writings better than the life and death of Paul Dombey. (Grolier) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Description: First edition, with the earliest state of the hook on the left hand on the vignette title-page. With engraved Illustrations by H.K. Browne throughout. 8vo, in a handsome contemporary binding of three quarter tan calf over marbled boards, the spine with gilt bands, one compartment with brown morocco label lettered in gilt. xiv, 624 pp. A very handsome copy in a proper period binding, sturdy and attractive and unusually clean and bright throughout. FIRST EDITION. This is quite a desirable copy of the Dickens novel that introduced the world to the memorable Mr. Dombey and his transactions, business and personal, and that creates a "clear picture of society in [Dickens’] time." Dickens wrote it while in residence in a number of different areas, beginning the work in Lausanne, Switzerland, continuing in Paris, and finishing in Brighton, Broadstairs, and London, making the text "a true cosmopolite in the manner of its writing." The publication of this book marked a turning point for Dickens; his proceeds were a fine increase over MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, and with these earnings "his financial worriment ceased, prosperity began, and a period of money-saving was at hand." This is the first publication of the text in its entirety after its serialization from October 1846 to April 1848. Copies this early are becoming scarce. An excellent piece of classic Dickensiana.

DICKENS, Charles.. Dombey and Son. With illustrations by H. K. Browne.. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848, 1848.

Price: US$2230.81 + shipping

Description: First edition, bound from the original parts, in the publisher's primary cloth binding. The novel is "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" (ODNB). Following issue in parts from September 1846 to March 1848, Bradbury and Evans issued the novel in book form in the present cloth. In the 19th number of the part issue, a slip advertised the novel, ready for delivery on 12 April, at £1 1s. in cloth, or £1 4s. 6d in half morocco. The slip goes on to note "Subscribers desirous of having their copies bound in a similar style can have them done by Messrs. Chapman & Hall, 186, Strand, or through their Booksellers, at the following prices:– Whole bound, morocco gilt edges 6s. 6d. Half bound, marble leaves, 4[s.] 6[d]. In cloth, lettered 1[s.] 6[d]". This copy represents an owner of the parts making use of these binding services, with the characteristic stab-holes in the gutter where unstitched from the wrappers. At such a reduced price (1s. 6d compared to £1 1s for a new copy in cloth), it is evident why an owner of a complete set in parts would prefer having them bound, rather than purchasing a new book-form copy. For Dickens's novels, the publisher kept a stock of first edition sheets, and bound up copies and issued them over time as demand required. So too, owners of the parts could make use of the binding services long after publication. Changes in the cloth design over time allow the binding to be dated, and a primary binding to be identified. Smith noted this binding style as a variant, but incorrectly identified a binding with a chain design as the primary - the chain design was in fact introduced by Chapman and Hall in the 1860s, after they acquired remaining first edition sheets from Bradbury and Evans. Similar bindings with a chain design can be seen in Chapman and Hall's Dickens publications of the 1860s (see Kremers, p. 249). Kremers has subsequently identified this design, which he dubs "marigold", as the primary binding. "Marigold" is unique to Dombey and Son. Copies of the novel were subsequently bound into the "lineal-globe" cloth in the 1850s with a central arabesque on the covers, which is the primary binding of Bleak House (1853) and Little Dorrit (1857), and the "chain" cloth in the 1860s as stated above; these are secondary bindings. The primary "marigold" binding has two variants of blocking, with ornamentation on the inner frame, as here, and without; the variant with ornamentation is presumed by Kremers to be the earlier. The spine lettering also has two variants (indiscriminate with the blocking variants), the base lettered either "London 1848", or "London" only, as here; the absence of the date is presumed by Kremers to be secondary state. Smith I, 8. Lars Kremers, "A Comparative Bibliography of the Sheets and Publishers' Cloth Cases of the Demy Octavo Works of Charles Dickens, 1837-1872", 2013, pp. 210-211. Demy octavo. Original green diaper cloth, Kremers' "marigold" (primary), spine lettered in gilt, spine and covers with elaborate design in blind, cream endpapers. Frontispiece, vignette title, and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz); plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Expertly recased with neat repair at spine ends and joints, spine and extremities a little sunned, slight stain to front cover and ringstain to rear, some foxing as usual, plates browned and stained at foot. A very good copy.

DICKENS, Charles; BROWNE, H.K.. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848, 1848.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: "Time, Consoler of Affliction and Softener of Anger" Scarce in the 'Primary' Cloth Binding DICKENS, Charles. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First edition, first issue with the 'eight-line errata' (following all but a very few of the points in Smith), in book form of Dickens' seventh novel, bound from the original monthly parts, with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm). xvi, [1, errata], [1, blank], 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece, titlepage, and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz") including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road", facing p. 547. Some of the plates with light foxing, mainly marginal, otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example. Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint, head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired, spine slightly faded. An excellent example, far better than is usually seen, of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth. "Dombey and Son originally appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, the last forming a double number, from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12, 1848. at 21s. Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate, which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road," p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process." (Smith). Smith I:8. Complete with half-title, 2-line errata leaf (bound at the end) and all 40 original plates. Extra-illustrated with the additional 12 plates by H. K. Some foxing to the plates, as usual. With the first appearance of a "dark" plate in a Dickens' work, used more extensively in later novels like Bleak House and Little Dorrit. The last copy at auction in the publisher's full morocco binding made 5,625 pounds at Sothebys in 2019 (part of the Larry Drizen collection) and did not include the rare extra suite of twelve Phiz plates produced by Chapman and Hall. Smith 8. Near Fine.

DICKENS, Charles.. The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain. A fancy for Christmas-Time.. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848, 1848.

Price: US$76484.81 + shipping

Description: First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title "William Haldimand Esquire With the cordial remembrance and regard of Charles Dickens Twenty ninth March 1849". A former director of the Bank of England and a Member of Parliament for Ipswich, William Haldimand (1784-1862) was the brother-in-law of William de Cerjat, one of Dickens's lifelong friends and correspondents. Dickens met Haldimand during his visit to Switzerland in 1846, where Haldimand had retired in 1828. This was a time of some mental frustration for Dickens, and he gained some relief by reading the first number of Dombey and Son to Haldimand and Cerjat. Haldimand's friendship was evidently of some significance to Dickens - he named his seventh child Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens. The Haunted Man, published on 19 December 1848, was the fifth and final of Dickens's Christmas books. "As soon as he returned from Broadstairs to London, he started work on the Christmas Book he had for so long been contemplating, a book about lost time. The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain is concerned with the power of memory, with family life which is destroyed and replaced only by the wretched anxieties of a distinguished but solitary man. the theme itself revolves around Dickens's belief that memory is a softening and chastening power, that the recollections of old sufferings and old wrongs can be used to touch the heart and elicit sympathy with the sufferings of others. It has been said that in this autobiographical fragment Dickens is only suppressing his feelings of hurt and jealous rage, but it seems more likely that he was actively involved, after Fanny's death, in the process of transcending them" (Ackroyd, p. 553). Provenance: the Comte Alain de Suzannet, with his bookplate to front pastedown (this copy not recorded in the catalogue for the sale of his collection at Sotheby's, 22 November 1971); the collector Michael Sharpe, morocco book-label to front pastedown; the Lawrence Drizen Collection of Charles Dickens. Eckel p. 124; Smith, II, 9, pp. 68-70. Peter Ackroyd, Dickens, 1990. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front cover in gilt, frame stamped in blind to covers, yellow endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom red half morocco box and chemise. Frontispiece, engraved title page, and 15 illustrations in the text, by Leech, Stanfield, Tenniel and Stone. Neat early ownership signature to front free endpaper. Wear at spine and joint ends, top of backstrip loosening, light soiling and rubbing to cloth, front hinge starting, initial leaves loosening but stitching holding; still a very good copy in the original cloth.
