Inside end papers have been torn out otherwise in very good condition with the odd spot of foxing.

Description: This first edition is profusely illustrated by one of the great canine artists Cecil Aldin with 2 full page colour plates tipped in ( Mickey, his Irish Wolfhound & Cracker, his Bull Terrier) as well as many other of his duotone drawings of dogs. The book features brown boards with gold lettering and a beatiful colour cameo of a bull terrier on the front. The unclipped dustjacket has some chipping on the spine and some spotting and foxing. it is in fair condition and is protected by a mylar cover. There is moderate foxing on the prelims and page ends. on some of the interior pages. This was never a library book.

Cecil Aldin was a British writer and illustrator who may be best known for his dog stories. This book was written for a juvenile audience and gives instructions on owning, training, and showing dogs. Aldin's bull terrier, Cracker, appears on the front cover illustration. BOOKPLATE: The front pastedown contains the bookplate of [Major] Clive Behrens (1871-1935), a member of the British Royal Legion and listed as a Breeder in The Hunter Stud Book, Vol. IX, 1921. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment was his marriage to (Charlotte) Evelina Rothschild in 1899. They lived and raised their family at Swinton Grange, Malton, Yorkshire, built as a wedding gift for them by her father, Nathaniel, 1st Lord Rothschild.

Quarter bound in white vellum over cream paper covered boards. Title in gilt on spine and in outline lettering on upper cover. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. 77 illustrations by Aldin, 7 full page. No wrapper as issued. The book is square and tight. The cream boards show an inevitable touch of soiling, as does the vellum spine. The lower corners are slightly bruised. The pages are very clean. No foxing. There are no loose or dog-eared pages. The binding is solid and without cracked hinges. There are no previous ownership inscriptions. SIGNED with an ORIGINAL SKETCH to the limitation page by Cecil Aldin. A very nice copy. Paypal accepted.
