Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, first printing, Evergreen Book issue. Publisher's paper wrappers, lettered in red, gray, and white over black. Near fine, with light rubbing to spine and extremities, light stain to the bottom edge, date stamp inside the front wrapper. A handsome copy. Kerouac wrote Doctor Sax in 1952 while living with William S. Burroughs in Mexico City, but the novel was not published until 1959 after the success of On the Road (1957). It features the author's fictional alter-ego, Jack Duluoz, who represents a younger Kerouac and makes appearances in subsequent novels. Throughout the text, Kerouac mixes his childhood memories with his youthful fantasies, the two of which have become inextricably intertwined. The central fantasy centers on the mythical Great World Snake, a villainous, slumbering creature who is predicted to devour the whole world upon its awakening. Similarly, the fictional Doctor Sax, a dark yet friendly entity who is hallmarked by his black cape, black slouch hat, and eerie laughter, spends his days preparing a poison that will destroy the snake should it ever awake. Doctor Sax utilizes Kerouac's steam-of-consciousness writing style or "spontaneous prose" that he attempted to insert into On the Road and would later publish in Visions of Cody (1972). Although it was not critically successful, Kerouac maintained that Doctor Sax was "the greatest book I ever wrote, or that I will write." This first Evergreen Book soft cover edition was issued simultaneously with the first hard cover edition.

Price: US$2150.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Grove Press, New York, 1959. 245 pages. First Edition, 1st printing. Original 1st issue DJ with $3.50 price intact on flap. Between 500 and 1,000 copies were printed in this format and famous dj. Gray boards are clean and bright as are gold titles on backstrip. Book is tight and crisp. Corners are sharp though barely pushed, gently (not bumped). Page edges show most minor, faint soiling. Endpapers are bright and clean with most minor faint spotting. Foot and crown of backstrip gently pushed. DJ is in lesser condition than the beautiful book. Highly sought after and preferred DJ version in red, gray, black and white coloring. Slightest fade to the red Jack Kerouac name on the DJ backstrip. $3.50 price intact on DJ flap. DJ shows rubbing around the edges, chipping at foot and crown and faint cloud stains on the rear and flaps. Light bleed to rear of DJ. DJ shows a couple of small textural scuffs. DJ verso shows tape reinforcement (not on exterior). These DJ flaws have no effect on the condition of the book whatsoever. Condition description is hyper-critical and flaws are overstated. This is an incredible near fine to almost NF book in a VG- to G+ dj.

Kerouac, Jack. DOCTOR SAX. Grove Press, Inc, New York, 1959.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First printing of this "experimental, florid, and wild" (LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, 61) tale of dreams and childhood fantasies - in excellent condition. Written while living with William S. Burroughs in Mexico City, DOCTOR SAX is a prime example of Kerouac's "spontaneous prose" - a style of writing he compared to jazz music. Its setting and theme are unique among Kerouac's works, reflecting his own childhood through a "dark funhouse" mirror rather than the wild adult "years of Beats and bodhisattvas" (Lehman) he is best known for. This copy is in notably sharp condition, exhibiting very little of the dust jacket rubbing normally seen on first printings. 8'' x 5.25''. Original grey cloth boards. Original unclipped ($3.50) dust jacket. 246 pages. Small bookseller label to rear pastedown. Jacket with light wear to spine ends, one tiny closed tear; a touch of sunning to spine. Tight and clean.
