LOFTING, Hugh.. Doctor Dolittle's Return.. London, Jonathan Cape 1933., 1933.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Hardcover. Bookseller's label on the bottom hinge corner of the front paste-down, a mild (thumbnail size) stain on the cloth, otherwise very good in a good/fair price-clipped dustjacket with some professional restoration (a few small closed tears, a piece restoring the title on the spine, and the excised price of 5s on the spine has also been restored). British author and illustrator Lofting (1886-1947) studied civil engineering and architecture, first in the US at MITand later at London Polytechnic. He then became a surveyor in Canada, worked for railway companies in Africa and Cuba, and served with the British Army in Flanders and France during World War I. Lofting's family was settled in New York and the Dolittle stories began in versions he sent home in letters to his children during his war years. Altogether Lofting wrote 13 Doctor Dolittle novels (many rather episodic in style) between 1920 and 1953, published by Stokes & Lippincott in the US, and Jonathan Cape in the UK. The editions/printings up to the mid-1950s are the best for collectors, handsomely bound with wonderful jackets illustrated in colour by the author, each with an on-laid colour plate within an illustrated border design individually designed for the title, vibrant colour endpapers, a colour frontispiece, and many b/w drawings. Later, from the 1960s, Cape in England continued to publisher the Dolittle books in a good format, , with the jackets and endpapers redesigned by talented artist Jan Pienkowski, in Lofting style, but the original production and artistic qualities did not survive. The pre-1950s editions are now becoming scarcer in collectible condition with each passing year.

Lofting (Hugh). Doctor Dolittle's Return.. Jonathan Cape, 1933.

Price: US$320.82 + shipping

Description: FIRST EDITION, colour-printed frontispiece, title-page design and 14 full-page illustrations by the author, 12 of the latter charmingly hand-coloured, contemporary gift inscription to half-title, a few spots, pp. 288, crown 8vo, original grey cloth, the upper board and backstrip with lettering and border in green, a few spots to edges, endpapers with colour-printed design by the author, dustjacket with onlaid Lofting illustration to front panel, price-clipped, lightly soiled with gently browned backstrip panel and a few nicks m(internally tape-repaired), very good. The hand-colouring to this book is well-executed and enhancing - particularly noticeable given that the register of the colour-printing to the frontispiece is a little off. It is possibly the work of the book's original recipient, one Stephanie Coltant, who received this book for Christmas from her father in the year of publication.
