Says published Sept. 14, 1923, then states Second Printing Sept 7, 1923 (before publication). 191 numberede pages. Illustrated in color and black and white drawings by the author. Illustrated eps. Text is printed only on the right side. Little foxing to eps and off-set from jacket flaps; else contents clean and tight. Cloth covers, clean and bright. Price clipped jacket has a few small pieces missing from edge, a few small closed tears. There is also a piece missing from the top of spine and front cover wrap-around (about 1" x 1 1/2"). Off-white rear panel of jacket is cover soiled. In removable, protective, archival mylar. Scarce in dust jacket. Further info upon request. Front jacket flap reads " by the author of the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in 1922" The Newbery List indicates The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle received that honor 1923. Description: First Editions. Hardcovers lacking dust jacket. Four volume set: (1) Doctor Dolittle's Post Office (1923, 8vo, 359 pages.) (2) Doctor Dolittle's Circus (1924, 8vo, 379 pages.) (3) Doctor Dolittle's Caravan (1926, 8vo, 342 pages.) and (4) Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake (1948, 8vo, 366 pages.) The books are in generally good condition with some shelf wear, soiling to spines, spotting to covers and bumping to edges. Text interiors are clean and tight. Doctor Dolittle's Circus has previous owner's contemporary name and date on half title page. Doctor Dolittle's Caravan has both front and back hinges cracked but not separated. First three volumes retain their frontispiece tissue guards while I doubt Doctor Dolittle and the Secret Lake was ever issued with one from Lippincott. Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author trained as a civil engineer, who created the classic children's literature character of Doctor Dolittle as letters to his children from the British Army trenches in the First World War rather than relate the horror of World War I. #031827 Size: 8vo
