In 1887 and 1888 Count Samuel Teleki von Szek, an Austrian nobleman with an estate in Transylvania, undertook a sporting and exploratory expedition into the East African interior. Departing from Zanzibar with von Höhnel, he ventured into the region south of the Ethiopian highlands and there discovered Lakes Rudolf and Stephanie (now named Lake Chew Bahir).'We hurried as fast as we could to the top of our ridge, the scene gradually developing itself as we advanced, until an entirely new world was spread out before our astonished eyes. The void down in the depths beneath became filled as if by magic with picturesque mountains and rugged slopes, with a medley of ravines and valleys, which appeared to be closing up from every side to form a fitting frame for the dark blue gleaming surface of the lake stretching away beyond as far as the eye could reach. For a long time we gazed in speechless delight, spell-bound by the beauty of the scene before us, whilst our men, equally silent, stared into the distance for a few minutes, to break presently into shouts of astonishment at the sight of the glittering expanse of the great blue of the sky. At that moment all our dangers, all our fatigues were forgotten in the joy of finding our exploring expedition crowned with success at last' (Vol. II pp. 92-5).Czech p. 78 ('this scarce set represents African adventure at its finest').

Description: First English Language Edition. Translated from the original German into English by Nancy Bell, one of the most noted translators of her day. Volume I: large octavo, pp xx, 435, frontispiece of Count Samuel Teleki von Zek, 21 black and white illustrated plates, 71 illustrations in the text, very large full color fold-out map, errata. Volume II: large octavo, pp xii, 397, frontispiece map showing the route of the expedition, 13 illustrated plates, 72 illustrations in the text, very large full color fold-out map, errata, appendix, index. Both volumes bound in publisher's brown cloth with gold decorations and spine titles. Spines on both volumes slightly slanted. All corners gently rubbed, ends of spines gently bumped. Volume II has a small dent to the spine. No cracked hinges. Binding sound. Both very large full color fold-out maps are clean and beautiful. The map in Vol I has some rubbing to the left inset map (not the main map) with a small loss. Both maps are backed with strong cloth tape along the left margin to prevent tearing when you unfold them. Neither map has any tears. Mild to moderate age spotting throughout both volumes that affects most pages. Pages with plates also spotted, but spotting is confined to the margins for almost all plates. An important title for both exploration and sporting/hunting. Czech says of this set "An excellent work of exploration and sport, this set represents African adventure at its finest." The expedition hunted buffalo, rhino, elephant, eland, and a variety of plains game. Howgego tells us that Count Samuel Teleki was a member of a prominent Hungarian family who was a wealthy member of the Hungarian Upper House. Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria, son of Emperor Franz-Joseph I, recommended that Teleki turn his proposed African hunting safari into an exploration expedition as well as a hunting safari and he did so. Ludwig Von Hohnel was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Navy and member of the expedition, it was Hohnel who organized the expedition (no expense spared) and then wrote this book. Teleki and Hohnel were the first Europeans to set foot on Mount Kenya and climbed to an altitude of 4,300 meters. They discovered the last of the great African lakes to be discovered by Europeans and named them Lake Rudolph and Lake Stefanie. Lake Rudolph is now named Lake Turkana. The expedition had numerous difficulties and violent confrontations with Africans, exacerbated by Teleki's rough treatment of his own porters and tendency towards violent confrontation. For part of their journey, they had trouble in areas that the pacifistic Joseph Thomson had earlier crossed without incident. The expedition brought back more than 400 ethnographical objects, mostly from the Maasai and Kikuyu tribes as well as a large collection of plants and animals. Many of the illustrations in this book were drawn using photographs Hohnel took on the expedition, the most important of the photos were destroyed in WWII. Ships same or next business day. Please note this is a 2 volume set of slighty oversize hardbacks - international shipping will require substantial extra charges in addition to those quoted by this website. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Description: (London: Longmans Green & Co 1894). First UK Edition in 2 Volumes. 8vo, pp. xx, 435; xii, 397, [1]; with a large coloured folding map at end of each volume, numerous illustrations and maps in the text (some full-page). First published in German in 1892. Publisher's original brown cloth spines lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes of a gazelle to the spine, and of African tribesman to the top board of each volume; black endpapers (which are original). Each volume has the bookseller's ticket of Rowland Ward & Co Limited to the top left hand corner of the front paste-down. James Rowland Ward (1848–1912) was a British taxidermist and founder of the firm Rowland Ward & Co. Limited of 166 Piccadilly, London. The company specialised in and was renowned for its taxidermy work on birds and big-game trophies. Rowland Ward was also a well-known publisher of natural history books and big-game hunting narratives. Both volumes are inscribed by Rowland Ward to Charles Henry Sanford (an Anglo-American millionaire) whose book-plate adorns the front paste-down of each volume. The books are inscribed as follows: "To C. Sanford Esq:/ with Rowland Ward's/ Kind regards/ 1897". Interestingly, the book-plate of Charles Henry Ward was designed by Herbert Ward (1863-1919) who was a British sculptor, illustrator, writer, and explorer in Africa. He was a member of Henry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and became a close friend of Roger Casement while they were working in the Congo. This is a very good (or slightly better) set with both the cloth bright and clean and the gilt un-tarnished. There is the usual light foxing throughout (a common fault with this book). The spine tips are a trifle softened. The black end-papers of each volume have a few short strips of tape residue (likely caused by the removal of a letter or perhaps a newspaper article put in by a previous owner). "An excellent work of exploration and sport, this scarce set represents African adventure at its finest. Departing from Zanzibar the expedition hunted buffalo, rhinoceros, and a variety of plains animals in the neighbourhood of Mount Kilimanjaro. There was also considerable elephant hunting near Mount Nyiro, with additional elephant hunting near Lake Stephanie." - Czech. Czech p78. Widely considered to be one of the great set of books on hunting and exploration of East Africa. Scarce with these attributes. Price: US$3527.59 + shipping

Description: First edition in English of this excellent work of exploration and sport, noted for recounting the European discovery of Lake Turkana. Hungarian nobleman Samuel Teleki (1845-1916) developed an interest in the region north of Lake Baringo, in what is now Kenya, after learning of Joseph Thomson's expedition, which reported the supposed existence of a large, haunted lake further north. He was encouraged by Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria to turn an intended safari into a journey of exploration, and von Höhnel, a naval officer, "would equip and arm the expedition to the highest standards, money being no object" (Howgego). The party arrived in Zanzibar late in 1886, crossed to Pangani in January the following year and reached the foothills of Kilimanjaro by June, making an assault on the summit in which Teleki reached a height of 5,300 metres (von Höhnel turned back after 4,950). They continued north along Thomson's route through the Masai and Kikuyu homelands. They reached Lake Baringo in February 1888, and Lake Turkana the month after. Returning via Baringo, they followed the Rift Valley and passed the future site of Nairobi, arriving back at Mombasa in October with over 400 ethnographic objects and a large collection of plant and animal specimens. Von Höhnel's account originally appeared in German (1892). This English translation is also encountered in brown cloth, with no priority assigned. Many of the original photographs taken by Teleki and von Höhnel are believed to have been destroyed during the Second World War, so are only preserved by the drawings in the published account. Provenance: front pastedowns with the bookplate of Norman Douglas Simpson (1890-1974), Cambridge botanist who was in Africa throughout the 1920s, working for the Cotton Research Board at Giza and on irrigation projects across Egypt and Sudan while also collecting plant specimens for Kew. Czech p. 131; Howgego IV T11. 2 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, blind rules on boards enclosing gilt vignette on front, black surface-paper endpapers, edges uncut Wood-engraved frontispiece in vol. I, map frontispiece in vol. II, 2 large folding colour maps linen-backed at stub as issued, illustrations in the text. Spines cocked, headcaps and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, a few small markings to cloth, moderate foxing, very occasional marginal finger-soiling. A very good copy.

The set was part of a reference library and not a lending library, thus remains in very pleasing, as fine condition. Shelf numbers in the lower quadrant of the spines sometime discreetly coloured over in pigment matching the binding colour, only light aging to the volumes. A very attractive pair. RARE FIRST EDITION IN THE MOST PREFERRED OF THE CLOTH COLOURS. This is the scarce account of the exploring and hunting expedition of Count Samuel Telki Von Szek and Lieutenant Ludwig Von Höhnel to Eastern Equatorial Africa. Although the narrative was produced for the general reader and therefore deals more with the adventures and experiences then with the scientific work it contains considerable information of value. As the title suggest, the primary contribution of the expedition was the discovery of Lakes Rudolph and Stephanie in the mountainous region just northeast of Victoria Nyanza and thus adding one more piece to the great puzzle of the African watershed whose complexity had eluded European explorers for decades. There are also accounts of exploration during ascents of Mounts Kilimanjaro and Meru and considerable work of anthropological interest. This copy is in the rare blue cloth. It is the first and only edition in English and was translated from the original German by Nancy Bell (N. D'Anvers).
