Overall this relatively scarce 1st US edition is in good to very good condition.

Description: 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 in. 402 pp. First American edition. Ochre cloth boards with black titles and designs. Blank endpapers. Condition is GOOD+ ; spine is cocked but binding tight. Covers very clean with a little surface wear. Spine very mildly toned. Corners and spine ends bumped with mild wear. Rear pastedown has a vertical crack but it doesn't appear on the exterior. Rear lower joint has a small break to the paper that does not affect the strength of the joint. Title pg and text clean, bright and unmarked. Fic. RGR.

Description: Hardcover. Very Good. First US edition of his first book. Author's edition on verso. Some copies have ads on eps. This is the state with plain eps. Spine is soiled and crown of spine has some edge wear. Front and rear boards have faded some. Eps have tanning but book is otherwise internally clean. Front fly-leaf has small chip to upper right hand corner. Rear eps has some cracking at gutter but book is bound quite solidly. Small bookstore stamp on inside of front board.

Description: vii, 402 pages. A pleasing unsophisticated example of the first US edition, in second state covers, of Hardy's first published novel. Gilt titles faded on spine. Edges tanned. Spine rolled forward half an inch. Front pastedown and endpaper recto show soiling. Hinges and all pages fully secure and binding sound. Generally a clean and unmarked interior: occasional spot of foxing or small stain to minority of leaves and in three or four instances heavier as seen in photo. The two leaves pp. 317-320 show printer's error of top folded and slightly proud at top edge.
