Kerouac, Jack. DESOLATION ANGELS. Coward-McCann, Inc, New York, 1965.

Price: US$600.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of this sequel of sorts to DHARMA BUMS, in which Kerouac weaves Buddhist themes through memoir - in beautiful condition. Kerouac "wrote [DESOLATION ANGELS] by hand by candlelight" (Charters) after which the manuscript was "passed from hand to hand in the literary underground" (dust jacket) until it was finally published in 1965. In two sections, it chronicles his painfully lonely stint as a fire lookout as he tries to live a Zen life, his exploits in San Francisco, Mexico, and New York, and the time immediately after he found fame with ON THE ROAD. Another peek into the world of Beat greats. An excellent example. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original orange publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to front board and spine. Original pictorial unclipped ($5.95) orange, yellow, and white dust jacket designed by Sam Salant. With yellow endpapers. xxviii, 366, [6] pages. Touches of shelfwear at etremities. Else a bright, clean, and sharp example.
