Opening initial, decorations, section headings, and printer's device in terra cotta. With 64 map facsimiles (20 in color). This is the sequel to Becker's Diseños of California Ranchos: Maps of Thirty-Seven Land Grants (1964). "One of the essential parts of the process of obtaining a grant of land in accordance with Mexican law was the diseño, or sketch map, which served to define the specific tract under question. Although it was once assumed that each petitioner prepared his own sketch, recent investigation shows that the majority of the more than 600 diseños produced in California was the work of a small, heterogeneous group of amateur, self-taught cartographers" (from the prospectus). And this work focuses on the map-makers. One of 500 copies printed on Ruysdael paper by Grabhorn-Hoyem. Prospectus and specimen pages laid in; also laid in is a huge Christmas/holiday card from notable San Francisco book dealers Antoinette and Warren Howell. Fine copy; prospectus is near fine (with some light creases). Grabhorn-Hoyem Bibliography 29; Two Hundredth Book [Bibliography of the Book Club of California] 133.
