Description: Family-owned bookshop in Steubenville, Ohio: BookMarx Bookstore. Books shipped within 24 hours. Handsome red cloth binding and gilt lettering on spine. Binding tight. Some pencil marks on inside front cover; elsewise no marks noted in text. Somewhat acid pages tanned with age. Nice copy all in all. This book begins thus and keeps up all the way - a treasure for a certain literate sort: . 'DESERT ISLANDS: being the VOYAGE of a HULK, called by courtesy a Lecture, that was launched under the Auspices of The Royal Society of Literature of London many years ago, namely in 1920, was afterwards frequently in Dock again for Repair and then refitted for FARTHER ADVENTURINGS, and so at length became laden with an unconscionable Cargo of Odds and Ends and Flotsam and Jetsam, much of it borrow'd from other Vessels infinitely more Seaworthy than itself, and the most of that concern'd with what are known as ISLANDS, some of them Real, some of them Allegorical, and the rest purely Fabulous; together with a rambling discourse concerning a certain very Famous Man of Letters, viz. DANIEL DEFOE, and his Elective Affinity, ROBINSON CRUSOE: which, being concocted in a most Unmethodical Fashion, is now presented to a World already groaning under an intolerable Burden of Printed Matter by its Humble Servant the Author, and dedicated to his son DICK, MDCCCCXXX.'

Description: Green end-papers with vignette in brown. Author's reflections on the "tale of adventure" in the 18th century, with particular emphasis on the Defoe classic; extensively annotated."De la Mare's anthologies should be numbered among his creative works; for in them the quoted passages are woven together on a web of imaginative comment as highly wrought and as often as long as the quotations themselves; so that the whole emerges less as a collection of other men's writings than an expression of the thoughts aroused in the anthologists by these writings, and coloured by the mood in which he read them. These anthologies represent a new literary form invented by Mr de la Mare, which he has employed as yet another mode to express his unique vision of reality." - Lord David Cecil.
