JOUHANDEAU, Marcel (1888-1979) - BRAQUE, Georges (1882-1963).. Descente aux Enfers. Paris: Nouveau Cercle Parisien du Livre, 1961., 1961.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: 4to., (13 x 10 inches). 4 coloured lithographs by Braque. Unsewn in original ochre printed paper wrappers, as issued, uncut; original natural linen slipcase and chemise. Provenance: from the Collection of Prince and Princess Henry De la Tour d'Auvergne Lauraguais, their sale Sotheby's 3rd May 2012, lot 52 Limited issue, number 7 of 30 copies reserved for members of the "Nouveau Cercle Parisien du Livre", of a total edition of 200 signed by the artist and author. The author Jouhandeau struggled all his life, and alternately celebrated, his homosexuality and his Catholicism. Much of his work reflects these passions and ordeals. Braque, the celebrated French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, is best remembered for his "most important contribution to the history of art was his role in the development of what became known as Cubism. In this Braque's work is intertwined with that of his collaborator Pablo Picasso, especially from 1908 to 1912. For a long time it was impossible to distinguish their respective contributions to Cubism, for example in the development of Collage, while Picasso's fame and notoriety overshadowed the quiet life of Braque" (MoMA online). "Descente aux Enfers" is one of the last books he illustrated, and includes four fine lithographs depicting birds.
