The forms they take, and the means by which they appear in the physical world, are cataloged. How they correspond to actual phenomena, such as death and pestilence, is likewise noted. Conway draws upon various writings within the Biblical scriptures, together with later works published in the Middle Ages and subsequent centuries, to arrive at his own comprehensive treatment of the subject. The second volume of the work concerns devils. Various figures such as Ahriman and Viswámitra receive chapters, in which the writings about them are quoted to form a complete image of their behavior and meanings. Appearances of devils in later works, such as the diabolical Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust, are also catalogued." A scarce classic on the subject. Size: Octavo

Description: First edition. Complete in two volumes. xvi, 428, [1]; xii, 472 pp. Illustrated. Bound in publisher's russet cloth with gilt stamping, brown endpapers. Very Good+ with light rubbing, darkening to spines, small pieces of front free endpaper stuck to half title, occasional light foxing, a little wrinkling to title page from errata pasted on copyright page. Tiny ink correction to one page. An attractive, unsophisticated set. A classic expansive survey of folklore and religion throughout the world, covering all manner of practices, stories, and beliefs in otherworldly entities. Useful for summoning the true deep cuts of eldritch gods for one's ceremonies. Why waste everyone's time trying to land Lucifer when Chaldaic angel of death Malk-ad Mousa's schedule is clear and he's willing to work? Also an entertaining read. Here is a passage chosen at random, "There is a modern legend in the Far West (America) of a horse called 'The White Devil,' which in revenge for some harm to its comrades, slew men by biting and trampling them, and was itself slain after defying many attempts at its capture" (p. 127). Plenty of Fortean phenomena is mentioned as is slightly more mundane but scholarly history.
