In the person of Willy Loman, the aging, failing salesman who makes his living riding on a smile and a shoeshine, Arthur Miller redefined the tragic hero as a man whose dreams are at once insupportably vast and dangerously insubstantial. He has given us a figure whose name has become a symbol for a kind of majestic grandiosity—and a play that compresses epic extremes of humor and anguish, promise and loss, between the four walls of an American living room."

Arthur Miller. Death of A Salesman - with the Programme from the UK debut production at the Phoenix Theatre in London in 1949. New York The Viking Press 1949, 1949.

Price: US$51.53 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [10] pp 11-139 [140] A programme from the original theatrical run of Death of a Salesman at the Phoenix Theatre in London, offered here with the Book of the Month Club, American First Edition of the play. The programme uses the famous Joseph Hirsch image of a slope-backed Willy Loman with his sample cases on the front cover but set against an orange background, and with 'Phoenix Theatre' at the bottom of the page. The programme is eight page long and includes a full cast-list, noting that the original production was by arrangement with, among others, 'The Arts Council of Great Britain'. Performances began at 7.15 with matinees at 2.30. There are further details about scenery and costume design as well as 'Nylons and Stockings' - presumably a significant expense in late 1940s austerity Britain. The programme is in near FINE condition with the original '6d' paper label still on the front and back of the wrapper. The book is VERY GOOD in a GOOD Dustjacket with some wear at the top and bottom of the spine of the jacket. Very good copy with some of DillmanÕs pencil scorings in the margins in a very good dust jacket with general wear and chipping mainly at the top of the spine area.

Condition: Very Good

Description: The first Book of The Month Club edition of this classic play regarding the American Dream by Arthur Miller in the original dustwrapper. The first Book of The Month Club edition, with no reprints stated on the copyright page and Book-Of-The-Month Club selection stated to the front flyleaf. In the original iconic unclipped dustwrapper. Death of A Salesman by American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller is a two act tragedy telling the story of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman who's life gradually falls apart as the show progressive. The work is a harsh criticism of the American Dream and capitalism, themes of which Miller would continue to demonstrate in his other notable work A View From The Bridge. A smart copy of a canonical work of American literature. In the original orange cloth binding in the original price clipped dustwrapper. Externally in excellent condition with slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight fading to the head and tail of the spine and the upper extremity of the front board. Dustwrapper is smart, with chipping and the occasional closed tear to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Sunning and the occasional handling mark to the wrap. Offsetting to the reverse of the wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with marginal age toning due to paper used. Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing. Publisher's orange cloth, with an illustration of the play's stage setting and the spine lettering in brown, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a reproduced drawing of the play's stage setting by the play's original set designer Jo Mielziner; original first issue dust jacket with illustration of the protagonist Willy Loman designed by Joseph Hirsch. Near fine book with light toning to spine and edges, and slight lean to spine; very good unclipped dust jacket with light wear to edges, lightly nicked corners, a bit of chipping to spine ends. Overall, a vibrant copy without any fading. Death of a Salesman is Miller's best-known play, about Willy Loman, an aging traveling salesman who struggles financially and emotionally after losing his job. The plot was largely influenced by Miller's own experience as part of a prosperous immigrant family who achieved the American Dream only to be later devastated by the Great Depression. The story is told in stream-of-consciousness style, with Loman drifting between the reality of his shabby apartment and the idyllic memories of a more prosperous yesteryear. This literary technique is achieved in the theater setting through Loman's conversation with characters who exist only his imagination, as indicated by the play's half-title. Death of a Salesman debuted on Broadway at the Morosco Theatre in New York on February 10, 1949, starring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman and under the direction of Elia Kazan. A literary and theatrical success, Death of a Salesman won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949.

Description: 8vo, 139pp; orange cloth. The first printing, with the printer identified and "March 1949" on the copyright page; dust jacket with price of $2.50 on the front flap and photo of Miller on the rear flap. While not a rare book -- there are at any given given moment several dozen copies available, it is a difficult book to find in top condition. This does not quite fit that particular bill, but despite its stated flaws, it is a handsome copy and a good value. Mild dampstain affecting lower edge, especially on rear, slight shelf wear, still an unusually nice copy in an unfaded dust jacket with a pair of small closed tears to the front, loght rubbing to the extremities, and evidence of the aforementioned dampstain to the lower rear panel. A much nicer copy than it sounds.

Miller, Arthur. Death of a Salesman: Certain private conversations in two acts and a requiem. The Viking Press, New York, 1949.

Price: US$1800.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: One of the great American plays, winner of the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for best play. First edition (first printing, with no later printings noted). In the correct first printing dust jacket, with no New York Drama Critics Circle award mention. A near fine copy in a very good or better dust jacket with light wear at the edges and a short tear at one flap fold. If you read the Internet, you will find a lot of bogus information about identifying the first edition of this book. But it is not actually hard. DOAS follows the usual conventions for Viking Press Books (with the statement "First published." on the copyright page and no later printings noted). There is only one correct dust jacket, with a $2.50 price at the top of the front flap. All the stuff about orange boards, broken type on page 11; American Book-Stratford Press on the copyright page; Miller's photo on the back flap of the jacket; and the second S in salesman touching the arm of the figure on the front panel of the jacket are distractions. ALL first printings have them. Anyone who says they have a first printing but without those elements is either wrong or lying.

Miller, Arthur. DEATH OF A SALESMAN. The Viking Press, New York, 1949.

Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: Attention must be paid to this handsome first printing of the classic play by a giant of the American theater. "Even if you don't know Willy Loman from Willie Nelson, you're living in a world shaped by SALESMAN," writes Julia Keller of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Arthur Miller, "always a willing critic of the injustices in the American system," uses the pressures of capitalism and masculinity to convey the tragic story of traveling salesman Willy Loman, who, after realizing his insurance policy is worth more to his family than his life, dies in a "shameful, culpably American suicide" (Otten and Ratcliffe). The play was an immediate hit upon its release; this copy is the first edition in book form, includes glowing reviews of the play to the rear flap. Tony and Pulitzer-winning, Academy Award-nominated, and hailed as one of "the century's most durable dramatic myths," DEATH OF A SALESMAN continues to exert its presence on stage, screen, and in classrooms (Ratcliffe). 8'' x 5.5''. Original orange cloth, stamped in grey. In original unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket. Jacket drawing by Joseph Hirsch. Pictorial endpapers. 139, [1] pages. Corners lightly bumped. Jacket shows minor scuffing and creasing, with small chips to spine ends.

Spine has minor bumping, but overall a very firm copy. Wrapper has modest chipping and toning, but colors are sharp. Gently read and a very nice copy. Death of a Salesman is Miller's best known play about Willy Loman, an aging traveling salesman who struggles financially and emotionally after losing his job. The story is told in stream-of-consciousness style, with Loman drifting between the reality of his shabby apartment and the idyllic memories of a more prosperous yesteryear. Death of a Salesman debuted on Broadway in New York on February 10, 1949, starring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman. A literary and theatrical success, it won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949. It would also be adapted into a 1951 film in which Fredric March was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

The play premiered on Broadway in February 1949, ran for 742 performances, and has been revived on Broadway four times, winning three Tony Awards for Best Revival. Brooks Atkinson noted in his New York Times Review: "Arthur Miller has written a superb drama. From every point of view "Death of a Salesman," which was acted at the Morosco last evening, is a rich and memorable drama. It is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted." First Edition, second printing before publication.
