Seamus Heaney. DEATH OF A NATURALIST (First edition - third impression). Faber and Faber, 3 Queen Square, London, 1966.

Price: US$449.14 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A third impression of the true first edition of Seamus Heaney's first full collection, published in 1966 - the same year as the first impression. ***Near fine in emerald-green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, and the boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases to the boards. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding and no warping to the thin boards (as is sometimes found). Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. No major creases or tears - just very light creasing to a few leaves at the top corner - please note that this is not very noticeable. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine original printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 18s net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just very slight rubbing and loss at the head and tail of the spine, and a small closed tear at the bottom edge of the back panel. The dustwrapper is really clean, with just a couple of small marks to the front panel. The back panel, which is white, is clean and unmarked. Unusually, there is virtually no fading to the light-sensitive green and pink colours on the spine, which is extremely uncommon with this title. ***224mm x 142mm. 57 pages. ***'His words give us the soil-reek of Ireland, the colourful violence of his childhood on a farm in Derry. The full-blooded energy of these poems makes "Death of a Naturalist" the best first book of poems I've read for some time.' (C. B. Cox in the Spectator) ***'The power and precision of his best poems are a delight, and as a first collection "Death of a Naturalist" is outstanding.' (Christopher Ricks in the New Statesman) ***'What delights, in poem after poem, is the accuracy and freshness with which sense-impressions are recorded.' (Richard Kell in the Guardian) ***'I have completely persuaded myself that he is a poet of unusual quality, a poet to be grateful for.' (Karl Miller in The Critics, BBC) - Review quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***A third impression of "Death of a Naturalist", Seamus Heaney's first poetry collection, in really nice collectable condition, with an unusually unfaded dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of Seamus Heaney's poetry. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Description: First Printing of the poet's critically acclaimed first commercially published work (preceded by the privately printed pamphlet, Eleven Poems, in 1965), one of only 1,000 copies (bound from sheets purchased from Faber and Faber, Heaney's London publisher). Tall, slim 8vo: 57,[1]pp. Publisher's aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gilt; typographic dust jacket, in salmon-pink, olive and white, lettered in black and priced $3.75. Signed by Heaney on the title page. A stunning copy, tight, square and likely unread; about Fine jacket, fresh and bright, with usual fading to the fugitive salmon-pink on bottom half of spine panel but all lettering undiminished. Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Eric Gregory Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Heaney received the Nobel Prize in literature, in 1995. Brandes & Durkan A2b. A collection of 34 poems largely concerned with rural life, often in the context of childhood experiences and the formulation of adult identities and intimate relationships. It includes "Digging," "Death of a Naturalist," "Blackberry-Picking," among others. "Seamus Heaney has been, for good or ill, internationally the most prominent and the most popular Irish poet of the latter part of the twentieth century and the first part of the twenty-first. . . . His first two collections, Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark [a signed copy of which we also have on offer], largely written before the renewed outbreak of the so-called 'Troubles' in 1968, show Heaney alerting his audience to the violent history of colonisation on his native ground, but preoccupied also by the rhythms of life in a rural setting remembered from his childhood. He also, in a Wordsworthian manner, focuses upon the sources and resources of his own poetic voice and power." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

HEANEY Seamus. Death of A Naturalist. , 1966.

Price: US$6416.33 + shipping

Description: First edition. 8vo. Original green cloth, dust jacket. London, Faber and Faber. A presentation copy of Heaney?s first regularly published collection, inscribed by the author in the year of publication with a quotation from James Graham's 'To his Mistress': 'For E.R. Patton - He either fears too much/ or his deserts are small/ who will not put it to the touch/ And stand to lose it all. Seamus Heaney, October 1966'. An earlier owner has identified the recipient as Elsie R. Patton, who appears to have grown up as a daughter of the manse in Cloughwater, Co. Antrim, and later taught at Bangor Grammar School (a prize for poetry is given in her memory). She was sister in law of Leopold Richardson, Hon. Professor of Classics at TCD, described on an inserted note as a friend of Heaney?s. Heaney?s inscription has been added to, presumably by Patton, to include 'his fate' to read: 'He either fears his fate too much'. On the front pastedown in the same hand is a lengthy note quoting variants of the poem. A very good copy, spine sunned as usual, some wear to extremities of jacket, and chips to the tips and head and tail of spine. Brandes & Durkan A2a.
