Description: First edition - the colonial issue, with that text neatly inkstamped to the copyright page. 8vo. 308pp + [iv] publisher's advertisements. Orange cloth lettered in black at the spine and upper board. Illustrated with one map. Top edge dust soiled and with some fading to the cloth at the backstrip and upper board. Spine ends gently rubbed and with a minor slant to the binding. Handsome former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Very good. No dust wrapper. The first edition of this book - colonial edition or otherwise - is now extremely uncommon.

Description: [Historical Fiction] LEATHER-BOUND FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[8] 308 [6]. Recently re-bound in navy half morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles to spine, and matching cloth over boards. With the original orange cloth spine and upper bound in at rear. Edges quite heavily toned, with some occasional spotting, otherwise a clean copy in an attractive new leather binding. A novel set during the Peninsula War in Portugal, 1810, in which a British Green-Jacket trapped behind enemy lines carries on a guerilla campaign against the French occupying forces. The novel is also a key source-book for Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' series, which includes a deliberate reference to Rileman Dodd, the main character, in 'Sharpe's Escape' (2004).
