Description: This 5.375 x 7.625 inch, 303 page hardcover book is the 1927 first trade edition of this title by Alfred A. Knopf. This copy is in very good condition although the covers do show wear and discoloration to the green cloth. The green spine cloth is faded and the paper spine label shows fading and browning, although the label itself is fully present and securely glued to the spine. The paper label on the front panel is in very good condition or better, with the color and lettering unfaded and with no rubbing. The green cloth panels front and back show fading at the edges but the cloth shows only minimal wear and the corners are all very good. The interior text shows a previous owner's inked name on the front pastedown, and the fore-edges of the closed text block shows some rubbing and flattening to the uneven trimming but beyond that the text pages are clean, unmarked, and showing no damage beyond a little age toning to the paper. This is the true first trade edition of this title as shown by the 1927 date in roman numerals on the title page and matching the copyright date on the following page. This copy has the two misspelled words on page 20 and 57. This copy has no dust wrapper. This title was Willa Cather's most acclaimed novel and is often included on listings of the most influential and enduring works of American fiction. Overall, a nice copy of this book. 303 pages.

Description: Original green cloth with the first printing error on page 20. SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper and quite scarce as such. There was a Limited Edition of 175 numbered and signed copies, but one rarely comes across a signed trade edition of this classic of American Literature. We found only two copies appearing at auction in the last 35 years, the Pforzheimer copy in 1987, inscribed to Carl Pforzheimer, and another inscribed copy in 2006. The present copy is signed only and on an integral sheet of the book, not on a piece of paper added later. This experimental modernist novel was first published serially in Forum between January and June 1927, and over 200 alterations were made for publication in book form. Cather "considered this book her best, as do many critics" (ANB). Set in New Mexico just after the annexation of the territory to the United States this loosely episodic work fictionalizes the lives of French missionaries John Baptist Lamy and Joseph Machebeuf. Inspired by the way the lives of the saints were written in The Golden Legend, in which their martyrdoms are no more emphasized than the trivial events of their lives, the work is "beautifully told in Cather's simple but eloquent style, and is one of the classics of modern American literature", included in the Modern Library's list of 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
